The ABS light came on ( continuous) ,- first time ever we got 130,000 miles on her. Question: Is this a sensor type light that comes on after so many miles like the O2 sensor? Or is this a possible brake issue? We've consulted owners manual
There are sensors at boht front wheels I believe on your 96 and one inside the rear differential. My 92 had the same thing happen and the sensor was filthy. Mine only has the rear ABS. You may want to check these sensors and the rings that trigger them for dirt grime. Again, Not 100% certain as to the procedure on the front ABS as I don't have it. But the rear one is mounted towards the top of the diff. in the 8.8" rear.
If it makes you feel better, my light has been on for probably close to 155,000 miles. There are a few things that I plan on doing "one of these days" that I have read in this forum but have not had the desire or time to do so yet. I have read from some that this is serious but luckily, mine is not. At least not yet.
You can easily pull the ABS codes by jumpering a wire on two slots on the red ABS connector under the hood (over by the brake master.) I had a bad solenoid (open circuit) and replaced it with a used valveblock (Ford shop manual calls it the Hydraulic Control Unit or HCU, and Ford wanted around $1400 for a new one) from Rancho Ford here in Sacramento (a Ford junkyard) for $125. Replaced that, bled the brakes etc., and got a new code: bad rear axle speed sensor (on the top of the differential), another $20 or so, and it was all fixed. No more ABS light. And the ABS works too, as the season's first snow showed... Let me know if you need the codes or directions, etc.
