do i need a friction additive. need quick answer please!!!!

Sorry for the question, i dont really have time to do a search and screen through the result. I am working a on a 99 Expy that belongs to my sister. I HAVE NO OWNERS MANUAL for the truck. I know the tag on the rear-end says 75/140 synthetic only. My question is do I need a friction moddifier? Also how fluid does this thing hold? thanks for the help, this site is a greatr plethera of information (if only i had time to search for what i needed)

If it has limited slip, you need the additive. Get some from the local ford dealer and put the whole bottle in. Then add more oil until it comes up just about to the fill hole.

If you have it 'opened up' can you tell if it is a posi or not? If so, you need the friction modifier unless the fluid you plan to fill it with already has it.

look on the differential on the passenger side there is a tag hanging it should have numbers and letters on it. starting from the differential cover it will tell you the gear ratio and if limited slip was an option. so if you have a 3.55 ls it would start from the cover 3 l 55 it is hard to read and the 3 will be partially coverd. also on my fords on the driver door post there is an axel code with two letters you can find the code on the internet. i did this a while back and it work out. just did not save the web site.

or... if you have both the back wheels off the ground, put it in neutral and release the parking brake. Then spin one wheel by hand. If the other side turns backwards from the way you're spinning the one, or doesn't spin at all, then it's an open diff. If they both spin the same way odds are you have a limited slip.

If you just don't want to put in any effort to find out what she's got, then add the friction modifier. It won't hurt a non-LS diff, and only costs a few bucks.

Htnaks for all the replys guys, i got it figured out. it is an open diff! I didnt know that the friction modifier wouldnt hurt anything or i would have just done that to start with and not have worried about it. Again thanks for all the reply and my this thread will help someone else out in the future if they search for it!

I am going back to my diesel forum now
