I was wonder how hard it is to replace the water pump gasket. i have a 95 psd and it is leaking antifreeze. it only leaks when its cold, and once it warms up everything dries up. so that basically told me its a gasket and i determined it was the water pump gasket. i am in high school and i go to a tech school for automotive, so i can do it all myself. if anyone has done one just let me know if it is just worth it to take it to the dealer.
thanks
Is it leaking around the thermostat housing or between the pump and block?
Are you sure it's a gasket and not the water pump? There is a weep hole that allows coolant to drip in the event of the internal seal(s) wearing out.
If it's a gasket, Try re-tightening all the bolts.
Another thing, The thermostat housings are prone to rust through so it could be that too. The thermostat housing seals with an o'ring but sometimes a little RTV sealant or Permatex along with the o'ring seal will it up again.
If it is the waterpump just replace it they are prone to fail on these truck's i just did the one on my truck a 97 4x4 at 125k for 250 bucks rent the fan cluch tool to help out. I stopped by ford and they wanted 960 bucks so i did it my self. Trust me replace your thermostat housing with a new one. You need to refill the coolant with ford gold or if you go with green you need to use SCA in the coolant to keep from pitting the block at the pistons bores.
Yes I agree just replace the pump. You have to take it off to get to the rubber o ring anyway. You will also need the tool to remove the clutch fan assembly. Otherwise you will fight to get it off.
