Well, I finally lost a headlight bulb. One of the SilverStars that originally were installed in my 'stang back in December 2004 or so finally burned out. I attribute it simply to the age of the bulb. I think thats pretty darn good for a SilverStar considering how often I use my headlights. Any recommendations on a new bulb?
GE Nighthawks or the uncoated Silverstars from Europe...Osram silverstars.
You can get the GE's at most Walmarts. The harness really seems to do a number on bulbs, especially the high output types. Entirely worth it for me though. ~$20 a year in bulbs is cheap insurance.
In a 9007, I'm not sure stateside. I know where to get the H4's, but hey don't have any others. They are on ebay sometimes, but I didn't see any just now. I forgot to mention that Phillips is supposed to have some good bulbs too. I haven't tried them because they aren't available around here that I can find. I don't remember the exact name of the model, maybe Visionplus.
Oh, one more thing. I'm not sure if the Osrams are brighter, I just hear that they are bright and a lot of people like them. I will say that with the Nighthawks and harness, especially with a non clear lens (as opposed to the "diamond reflector/clear lens" of most newer cars), you are at/very close to the limit of how much glare you want to put out.
Once I put the Nighthawks in I had to aim mine down a little to safely run them, and this was coming from the already bright Xtravisions. I had people flash me a couple times right away. Hasn't happened since I aimed them down just a bit (they still shine farther than OE, the filament is in a slightly different location). I wouldn't bother going through the trouble of getting the S'stars, even if they are better/brighter, just to save hassle of replacing one.
I ended up going with the Nighthawks. I haven't really had a chance to test them out as I haven't had any long night trips. I do need to re-aim one of my housings though after a little oops. I'll let you know. Hopefully I will get a chance to drive her at night before I put it away next weekend and pull out the Mustang.
I ended up not going with the highs and lows at the same time as it was easier on the eyes and I could see more with just the highs on. I really should get out my infrared thermometer and measure the temps of the housings...
