SD/HD-Question
The Ford HD is the first generation of heavier built trucks, as compared to the traditional F-250 3/4 ton truck. Years ago, the original specs of a 3/4 ton truck was that the (safe) payload capacity was really around 1,500# - even though you could probably haul more than that. Around 1997 Ford came out with the (labeled as more suited for commercial use) F-250 HD which had around a 2,000# payload capacity (Ford still made the regular F-250 as well). Then in 1999 Ford came out with the F-250 SD (id badge had black boarder with chrome letters/numbers) which had around a 2,500# payload capacity. Then in 2005 Ford changed the F-250 SD (id badge now has chrome boarder with black letters/numbers) which has around a 3,000# payload capacity.
By the way, Ford did have a truck in the 1980s-1990s labeled an 'F-Super Duty'. This was basically an F-450.
The higher the payload capacity, usually the truck all the way around was built better. Better (bigger) brakes and so on.
I am sure others can add or take away from what was said here. But this is basic description.
