Hello all, on my 96 powerstroke, when i went to start it yesterday, it blew the number 22 fuse in the box under the hood. It will heat the glow plugs, crank over and fire, then it dies right away when it blows the fuse i guess? I finally had to shoot some ether in it and crank it right away to get it started. It ran fine after that. I went out this morning and it did it again. I dont know what is causing this, and i dont have my book with me here to tell me what that fuse does, but it seems to control the glow plugs and the injection system or something......... Once it blows the fuse the g/p's wont heat and it wont fire at all, it just cranks over..... Do you guys have any clue what would be causing this, I need this truck to get around since my dodge is tore apart at the moment...... Sorry for the long post. Derek
Unplug the fuel filter heater. The fuel heater in the bottom of the filter bowl is shorting out. Should be a plug on the left side of the filter housing. The same fuse feeds power to the PCM.
Is that the left side as you look at the motor from the front or from the drivers seat? I unplugged a plug on the left looking at it from the front and now the glow plugs will work but it wont fire??
Ok guys, i unplugged the bottom plug on the drivers side of the fuel bowl, and it still blows the fuse....... now when i unplugged the top plug on the passenger side, the glow plugs would work, but it wouldnt fire, it also wouldnt blow the fuse....... what now guys? Theres two plugs on the drivers side, did i unplug the wrong one?
Alright, I finally got it unplugged, that thing was a bugger to get off though lol. Will it hurt anything being unplugged or do I need to figure out how to get it fixed? Thanks alot for all the replys guys. Derek
You can leave the fuel heater unplugged. Many people leave then unplugged after they have a problem with them. As long as your running winter blend fuel and/or a fuel additive you should be good to go.
Don't worry about it ... My fuel heater rotted away and didn't even blow a fuse. It's been gone for a long time. Might want to change the fuel filter soon and get all the debris out of the bottom though.
Alright, thanks Brian. I just changed the fuel filter last week when I put in my injectors.... dang, looks like a wasted filter lol. The truck is back up and running now, thanks alot guys, you really helped me out!
