I have an '02 with 6 disk in dash stereo. I went to eject #5 disk, everything seemed normal, the little door opened & no CD. Now it shows #5 slot empty, but keeps telling me CD error. Any ideas how to fix, or how much this will cost me? (It sucks spending monery on things that don't make you go fast!)
Is the CD door still open? If so, get two strong little picks or flat head screw drivers or a small needle nose plier and pull your CD out. My friend's 6-disc jammed once and it did the same thing. I took two small flat heads and "clamped" it onto the CD and pulled it out, took several tries but once the CD came out everything went back to normal.
DavidT. got you covered on that. I end up having to do that myself once or twice a year.
Hemostats work real good too.
Having a wife that's a nurse is handy too!
I've done this three times now. Something with the rollers on mine, not pushing the CD out smoothly. The door comes down and the CD moves about a 1/4 and then stops. If i can see it start moving, i can *lightly* tap on the dash and the CD will bump on out. I've gotten mad at it before, and beat the dash so hard i thought i was going to crack it. All that did was make 5 of the 6 CD sliders come off of the track inside. I pulled the dash, and then pulled the radio. Studied it for about 15 minutes and then started working on it. In all, i know my CD player is muffed up and i want to get a new one, a stock 6CD unit. Mine does this all the time and will CD ERROR every time unless i tap on the dash to convince the CD out. I've pulled it out three times now i think, and now i leave it in the dash, but not clipped in, and next time it goes all i have to do is pull it out and remove a few screws. Don't be afraid to take it apart and fix it, just have some patience.
Fist on the top of the dash works for me too. I've noticed on my CD changer that it's more tempermental after I've been playing CD's for a while on a long road trip.
I had the same problem with my from time to time. I found the cure for this one day. Take a q-tip and dip it into alcohol(rubbing). Lift door on CD player with somethin and in each corner are some black spongy rollers at the top and bottom. Rub the q-tip on them to clean the dust off of them. I think the roller start moving when you open the door. This should clear up your problem. No more bangin your dash.
Also had error and whole unit would not work. Pulled radio out of truck with special tool. Let it sit for about thirty minutes to allow it to reset and worked fine ever since.
The newer design 6 CD player has a cooling fan in the back. The problem with our's is heat. Feel those babies when they come out, especially like Pocket says in the middle of a long trip. I sucks too because you can't play the radio, nothing. You are stuck with no tunes until you can stop and get that thing out. I've had three units now in my truck. They just do an exchange unit, take one out put another in that is supposed to be new. I just think its a bad design and the CD's heat up, warp slightly and that's enough to get them stuck. I've never tried the alcohol on the rollers, I'm gonna have to give that one a shot. I've thought about installing a cooling fan back there, but probably I'll just replace the whole unit one of these days.
I do the fist on the dash too, but I was reminded of my 95 & 96. That's when they had that narrow padded piece on the front of the dash. We'll just say that I became very proficient at replacing them especially in the winter when they are more brittle.
rad1026: thanks for the tip on the newer ones. I was going to add a fan, but my volume **** is starting to get a little goofy, even after cleaning it internally. I'll look for a newer take out.
I like the 6-discs right at hand. Also if someone looks in it and sees a stock radio, they usually move on.
I've had the CD ERROR message since last summer. I tried a bunch of different things and none of them worked. One of these days I'm gonna replace it. Untill then, I have an ipod adapter that seems to work just fine.
