hey guys, i posted for help in the diesel forum, but thought one more iron in the fire couldnt hurt.
i have been having intermittent problems with my truck only when it is cold, and when the cab of the truck heats up, they go away.
first, when it is really cold out, when i first start the truck i have no guages, and the throttle is in-op, and no warning lights on the dash. after the truck warms up, everything turns on just like the ey was just put in.
also, i just had some work done on the truck before christmas, and the same codes that were there then are now back: p0381, p0221, and p1139. the po221 is strange because that was changed before christmas. btw, when it was changed, all of the problems went away. but then returned.
when i run the truck down the road when it is cold, i get a whoosh that does not sound like the ebpv, but like there is no tube connected to the turbo, but this also goes away when the cab, not engine, warms up.
this makes me and my mechanic think it may be the pcm. is this reasonable? does the pcm control all of these?
thanks
If you think it's the pcm, get the truck running and do not turn the cab heat on. Take a hair dryer, find the pcm, and play the warm air on the pcm and see if the problems go away.
If that doesn't work, you may be able to find other key points to warm and see if they make the problem go away.
Did you know what the codes are referring to?
221 is throttle position sensor circuit.
381 is glow plug indicator circuit.
1139 is water in fuel indicator.
Seems like there is a wire/connector problems that is temp sensitive as well as some unrelated other problems.
my brother seems to think that i have a bad ground, but wouldnt that happen every time?
also, today, the truck started weird this morning as usual in cold, but with one extra twist: the radio, dash lights, and pwr locks were all turning on and off intermittently. before i got the hairdryer to the truck, everything was back to normal.
do i have a computer in the cab that controls all of these things, or does the pcm run everything?
thanks
You have a battery saver relay and a accessory delay relay in the fuse box that controls this stuff. This is the circuit that lets you operate this stuff after you turn the key off for a certain time. The brain for this is in the instrument cluster.
