Hi I am just getting started here and have made a bid on a 48 I thought it was an F1 but turns out it is an F2, what is the difference between an F1 and F2 bed rear end it is an 8 lug i found out but other than that I don't know? Help?
I'm not sure what you want to know here. Are you asking the difference between an F1 and an F2, or the difference between F1 and F2 beds?
There are a lot of differences (devil's in the details) between the two, not all of which I know, but certainly the collective conscience here can fill you in.
Good luck with getting that truck!

The F2: The frame is longer to accomodate the longer box. The box is longer (8') and wider (54") so nothing swaps there. Fender openings (front and rear) are cut larger to fit the larger tires/wheels. Rear end ratios are higher so you'll have slower speeds for the same engine rpm. Wheel base is longer as are the running boards. A couple more leaves in the springs and the 8 vs. 5 bolts on the wheels.
Otherwise everything in the cab and under the hood is the same.
Just to give you a rough idea where it falls, the F1 is a half-ton, the F2 is considered a light duty 3/4 ton. The F3 is a HD 3/4 ton. F4 is rated one ton. These ratings are per the 48 operator's manual.
edit: blue50, re: your 2nd post.
F1-F6 used the same flathead V8
F7/8 were different
Front fenders are different between f1 and f2, with f2's having a larger wheel/tire cutout. The beds on f2's are longer, but I think the rear fenders are the same. Also...IF the truck you're hoping for still has it, the flathead v8 will be different than the f1's.
If you can get the VIN, a lot of guys around here could decode it and give you a bunch of info.
So far as buying goes, a bit of advice--know all you can about the state of the truck (motor, tranny, rear end, wiring, suspension, RUST, etc.) before you commit yourself to it. Lots of guys on here have stories of buying their first rig, and then finding out it was too far gone, and having to buy one later that they could actually salvage.
Thanks, I just wanted to be sure what I was biding on it is on ebay and still has a few days to go but the bid is still really low its in lower WI at a scrap yard and they are trying to sell it before it gets scrapped. and if I get it it is a long drive from lower tx.
Is this it? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1948-...QQcmdZViewItem
If it is, I think you'd be getting a bargain if you snagged it within a few hundred dollars of where it is now. Eveng including the cost to have it hauled down to TX.
It looks to be original--worn severely, but original--to make it new again would take a lot of work, but be oh so worth it IMHO. Heck, I'd buy it if I could--no worries though, I'm no competition...this time.
I've watched it as well. It is a good truck. Are ya looking to restore or hot rod? Cuz that trucks looks to me to be a good one to restore, or atleast be a good donor for another F2 to restore. IE; it's pretty complete. Good luck and welcome to FTE.
I live in SE WI and this last weekend I trailered a car for a fellow board member out to Janesville. Where I had to take the car was about 3 or 4 miles from this truck. I took a ride over to look at it.
It's in pretty rough shape. The cab floor has holes and heavy surface rust. The cab corners are rusted through. The box and back fenders are junk and the front fenders are gone. On the good side the rims like they may be solid but they have a lot of paint on them. The flat six engine turns over by hand, don't know if it runs. The hood is pretty decent. I wouldn't concider driving all the up from Texas for this one, you have to be able to find something a lot nicer closer to home. I would concider it a good parts truck at $250, at most.
It's always a good idea to have someone in the area take a look at it for you. We have members in almost every state so if you try to give enough notice I am sure you can find someone close to go look at it.
Thnks everyone yes that is the one I was looking at the seller said it had a few quarter size rust holes in the floor area and the sides of the bed now it isn't sounding too good at all. There isn't much pickins down here Im on the coast and everything close is in even worse shape.
I would hold off and keep a watch. One will turn up closer to home. TX to WI is a heck of a journey for a truck, especially if it's in rough shape. We have to settle for rust buckets up here because that's pretty much all that's left.
tbmatt--I'm in KS, and have family in OK. There are plenty of old trucks sitting around, they're just in rural areas off of small highways...not interstates. Keep your eyes open, and you're sure to find one.
Shame she's so rusty--that's the danger of buying of the internet...pictures may say a thousand words, but all the words in the world won't surpass personal experience. Thanks to bob for giving the heads up!
Yep its a shame its so rusty could have been real nice I talked to the lister and he said he would cancel my bid since his description didn't mention all the rust. will wait to see if he follows thru. I will just wait and watch for something I can confirm that is really in as good a shape as he at first described. I have found a few in Minot ND at a Dicks Hot rod however it is even father than lower WI and its snowing up there. we only see that on tv down here!
