What year Jag?

What are the best year Jags to use for IFS and IRS? I am looking at getting a whole car, my buddy wants the rear and I am going to use the front and we'll split the costs. Can you give me any ideas with the pros and cons for each?
Thanks,
Bert

You want a series 3 XJ sedan. I believe that the years are 76-87. You want the vented rotor 4 puck caliper.

Any of the XJ's (XJ6L, XJ6, or XJ12, or XJ12L)?

Thanks,
Bert

I would look for the XJ6. The spring rates are higher on the XJ12 and the XJ6 springs are stiff enough.

I've been reading and a couple of sourcs said the Series 3 started in 1979 and ended in 1992, is this correct and are all the years in that stretch desirable?

Thanks,
Bert

The Jag Lovers website talks about the series 1 being from 68-73. The series 2 from 74-78 and the series 3 from 79-92 as you indicated, however the XJ-6 was changed in designation to the xj40 in 87 while the xj12 designation as a series 3 continued until 92. I know that you do not want the solid rotor 3 puck caliper front end-parts price and availability problems. I thought that the series 2 changed to the later braking configuration. I also can not speak for the xj40 IFS. To be safe and sure unless you get further information, I would look for a series 3 XJ6 IFS from 79-86.

Gotcha will do! I have seen a number of them on Ebay, but most of them further East (I'm living now in California). I did see one in AZ, but I think that will go too high, (I'm on a budget - struggling college student). But I will keep on looking. The great thing is you can get one for a pretty good price and we don't care what shape the body is in!

Thanks,
Bert

Series 2 have the vented discs and 4 spot caliper, so add them to your shopping list.

There's some parts interchange between the xj40 and series iii, but the subframes are different. I haven't seen an xj 40 subframe out of the car, and photos show they are similiar but not the same. Since no one is using the xj40, they apparently don't work in our application.

If you can get an XJS, I believe they have the limited Slip rear ends. Hard to come by as junkers though.

I have a rear end out of an 88 XJS V12. It has the heavy Dana posi differential with 3.0 gears. Also has the sway bar and trailing arms...hard to find those on most IRS that are for sale outside the car. I am in SoCal (El Cajon), if you're interested send me a PM.
