I'm doing the figuring out for my FE motor build. I plan to run a 4.25" stroke crank. I know I need to run BBC rods, and some fansy pistons. I want to end up w/ a near 0" deck clearance. I've noticed you can get those rods in a few different legnths.
If I run the 6.385" rod, then I would need a piton height of 1.66"
If I run the 6.535" rod then the piston needs to be at 1.510"
W/ the 6.7" rod, the piston needs to be 1.345"
I would assume that first off, I would want the longer 6.7 rod over the other shorter ones. I also realize that if they don't make pistons to that exact height I can take some off the top of the pistons, or deck the block if it's close enough.
My problem is I don't know where to even begin to look for a piston that has close to one of those heights, that will have the right wristpin size, and the right bore of 4.080", or somewhere near there +/-.020 I would imagine??
Any help would be awesome guys, thanks!
Or you can Check with Flatlander Racing.....they carry a long line of stroker kits for the FE's..and they also can set you up with just about any piston/rod combo you can come up with...
They have complete Line of stroker kits for the FE starting as low as $1699 and up depending on what piston -rod-rings and crank you may want to fit your budget!
Hey Russ does Jegs or Summit sell any of these stroker kits? What about PAW? I seem to remember other places that sold stroker kits but can't think of them.
Hey Matt...good to see you back. Been a while no??

Hey Glenn, Been trying to expand my knowledgebase with more in depth information the past while. I have been really involved in helping my friends power development for his race cars. I have a 1989 foxbody/cleveland project in the works right now but i am really considering the 385 series for reliability, seems the 351c block is only good to 5550-600hp and then hard block is a must but my block is already done. My seven day drinking has turned more like into 2 a days and i am pissing away all my money right now.
I think i still have the 361 steel crank but i ditched the timing cover and other stuff.
The parts you want are all available as a kit. Obviously I have a bias as to where to get them - - but more important is that you know what you need. You would need your actual intended bore diameter. You need your cylinder head chamber volume in cc's. You need your desired compression ratio and/or fuel requirements - we have a couple options.
As to the various kits - look out and make sure you get race rod bearings in whatever you buy from whomever you buy from. The lower cost passenger car bearings will assemble - but they'll ride on the crank's chamfer radius and fail in short order. Also consider having the kit balanced by the supplier. Local balancing can get pretty expensive (over $400) because of the amount of heavy metal (aka "mallory" or tungsten) required.

Well that's good to hear Matt. The 89 sounds like a cool project. Was that crank a 361 or 389?
Well, my desired bore is just 4.080 (.030 overbore), BUT if it is easier to get a BBC piston that has a bore of 4.060, or 4.100 or whatever it needs be, then I can go that route. I plan to port out a set of D2TE so looking at roughly 70cc....but maybe much smaller, i've been looking into welding cast iron, so I can shape my own combustion chamber out to make a fast burn chamber like a set of 289 heads I have. I might do the same thing however to a set of C1AE's that I have instead.
I've figured it out that if i run around 10.1-10.4 on my static compression, and the cam I'm gonna run, that will put my dynamic compression at around 9:1
So would it be easier to find a piston that fits my 4.080" bore, or to find a piston that is close, and make my cylinder that size? (whatever it may be)
I plan to go w/ Clevitte bearings, but how do I tell the "race" from the stock replacement type stuff?
C'mon - - I am trying like all heck to avoid just saying "call me"...
Race bearings are either Federal-Mogul "CH" series or Clevite "H" series.
The 4.080 bore pistons are perfectly easy - its a phone call.
They are offered as a 17cc dish or a 6 cc flat top.
Both fit the 4.25 crank with 6.700 BBC rods.
Hey B I'll be calling you soon also. I need pistons, rings, bearings and endless other things. Hope bizz has been good and things going well. I see your picking up a few new part vendors too! Very cool!
