Need a New Rear

Hey Guys,

Just came back from dealer -Friend of Mine works for Ford and found out that my rear is shot. The thing had a slow leak and when he checked the fluids, it was a quart short. So eventually the bearing started to wear and he said there was aot of metal shavings that were on the diff plug.

What is the price range I should pay for a used one. He said that I should go to a junk yard and pick one up. I looked online at and found that they range from $250-$600.

And is there any recommendations from anyone who lives in Jersy on where I can find one.
Thanks
Mike

If you could wait a few weeks, I'd sell you my '96 3.55 open for $450 (shipped), but my old 3.08 hasn't been rebuilt yet so I'm still driving on it. The last one I sold ('88 3.55 LS) went for $200. You shouldn't have trouble finding them in junkyards, but some may give you a price like $800, which is a rip-off. You can use any '87-96 FS pickup or Bronco rear axle, and you'll save a LOT of time & money if you buy it in the right ratio. I'd look for one that shows NO sign of ever having been opened (no silicone sticking out of the cover and the ID tag still attached), but that may be hard to find.

Need a New Rear

hey alpine7572
Where are you located? I have an 8.8 from a 90 Bronco sitting in my back yard. Has the stock 3.55 gear ratio and open differential. Never been worked on and I did not have any problems with it. Going to a 9" rear might be a problem with not having the RABS in it. I'm sure there would be a way to put in a 9" rear in, and by passing the RABS system if you really wanted the 9".

They biggist problem with the 8.8" rearends is the c-clips. The open diff. with spider gears is another problem. I've heard alot of people put in limited slip or lockers in. I had my 8.8" rear end custom built. I had a limited slip, 4.10 gear ratio, put in, and I had the axle flanges that hold the drums in place cut off and the 9" axle flanges welded in place, then mounted rotors and calipers in place. The brackets for the calipers are what is holding the axles in place, eleminating the c-clips. I haven't had any problems with limited slip at all.

Hope this helps
Happy New Year to all

The '96 had about 60Kmi when I bought it, and by the time I swap this axle out, I'll probably have put another 6Kmi on it. It's an open diff, as most Eddie Bauers had.
