I figured sparked would not be the correct word for the subject. Well I must admit I am fairly new to the diesel world but am wondering why all of you have decided to go diesel? For me it was a very underpowered 99 250LD along with seeing what could be done with them on Trucks! I must admit I love the truck and doubt I will ever go back to a gasser. Guess you can say I jumped on the bandwagon but wish I had known a while ago what I know now.
gas engines are too dang quiet.
when you get older, and the hearing starts to go, you don't have to put your hearing aids in to hear if a diesel is running.
I just got mine on Saturday. I bought it cause my family recently got into Camping and I have a 25' 6,000 trailer to tow around. I traded in my 02 GMC Yukon for the Superduty, the GMC had to work too hard towing the camper, and we wanted to hit some mountains this summer.
I gets lots of looks in it and just tonight I was walking out of dance class with my daughter and had the truck running to warm up. A little kid said to me that he liked my truck more than his Dad's (his Dad has a gasser F250) we both had a good laugh.
I started with diesel farm tractors in the 60's. Had other diesel tractors which I worked on. Got our 93 because we got a travel trailer which the gassers couldn't pull yhru the mountains. Our 93 was getting a little tired and old for the long hauls and got our new 04. Besides I love the diesel fuel smell and the clinking noise. Music to my ears.
I had a '96 F-250 Reg Cab Long Bed 4x4 with the 5.8L and 3.55 rear end. I pull an 8500 lbs load through the hills in the Lake of the Ozarks, MO. It didn't like to pull it AT ALL. I originally bought it from a Kansas Dealer that told me that load would be no problem. Well, yeah, in Kansas maybe. I lived with it for 10 years. I now have 2 little guys so I wanted something that I could take the whole family in. I always heard about the Torque of a diesel. So, after a test drive, I fell in love and bought my 2006 CC SB 4x4 Lariat 6.0!
Then my buddy asked if I could tow his drag car (12,500lbs) to the track one weekend. Since he's my mechanic, I said no problem. We get to the track for Test N' Tune night and there's two diesel trucks racing. He says it's only $10, give it a try. So I did. Now, roughly $18,000 later, I have the fastest diesel truck at the track!! OMG!! It's soooooo much fun to race!! Besides the $18K, I spent another $2700 on a spare engine, transfer case and transmission out of a wrecked 2004. Just in case. ROFLMAO!! Hey, I ain't got no warranty now to cover it!!
I've been driving diesels for 20 years now. Back when they were REALLY slow. :-)
He needs to find somebody with an 8V-92T DDC, don't he? That's when it started for me, I'm long since converted to CAT, but i'll never forget the scream of them old two strokes! No engine made since gives the sound of such raw, about to run away-sling a rod or two, pure power. Do some lookin around and find someone who has one running and just crack the throttle on it a few times if you've never been around one, that'll really put fuel oil in your vanes!!!
8V92T ain't nothin. what ya really need is a 12V71TT. now thats a screamin demon!! especially if there are no mufflers on it, and a quad box behind it!
I hear ya man! but I've never been fortunate enough to be around anything larger than the 8-92 in the old petes and freightshakers. I've got alot of experience with the smaller versions also, but I can imagine 4 more ports rollin that sweet eye burnin, ear peircing exaust. I have seen them in tractor pulls on the tv but that just aint the same! ya'll check out a post in the general auto catagory called "ford power at its best". It has a link to a utube video about a ford built sherman tank engine,i'd like to find more design info. I know it's a gasser but man when you hear it!!!!
A couple reasons for me
1. The sound. These things are beasts. Hearing that distinct diesel sound from down the street makes me smile.
2. Tunnels. Surround sound for the diesel engine. I just wish there were more in HI.
3. The MPG. Increase the HP and TQ and maintain the same, if not better, MPG you had when your truck was stock and STILL have better MPG than gasser's.
4. The SMOKE!!! Unlimited potential with these engines.
