302 swap ?'s

I'm going to be swapping the 302 in my 70 F100 for a 302 out of an 89 Ford. I am going to swap intakes also as the 89 was a fuel injected model. Aside from swapping the intakes, pullies, and timing cover what else am I going to need to swap? Thanks!!

you will have to use the flywheel and balancer from the 89 they are 50oz the 70 302 is 28oz...check the oil pans you might have to swap them, if so you will need to swap the oil pick up tube as well.

when I do a swap like this I like to pull the motor and set them side by side and start swaping parts.....

I'm not swapping parts if that's what you're thinking. I'm taking the old one out completely and putting the 89 in. Like I said, I know the intakes will have to be switched and the timing covers (if I want to keep the mech. fuel pump), and pulleys. I'm wondering about the oil pans though. The 70 is a front sump pan while the 89 is a double sump (I assume that's what it's called). It has the sump in the front and rear of the pan. If they both fit in the engine bay which one do you think would be a better choice, the single or the double?

The double sumps usually fit. I'd try to keep the same stuff together. Is the '89 a roller cam motor? If it is your going to need a steel cam gear for the old distributor. Get an electric fuel pump you'll be happier in the long run. Summit carries a carter one that's pretty good for carb set-ups. I think it's a 4070.

How do I tell if it is a roller cam motor and what would happen if I don't use a steel gear on the distributor? This motor is only temporary until I get the 351W built to go in the truck so I'm not putting a lot of money into this motor. It's just something to keep the truck going until the REAL engine swap.

I would use the pan that you know fits the truck...as far as swaping parts I just find it easyer to do with both motors side by side.

you will know if it's roller when you change the intake and if it is you will need to change the gear...but most likely it's a roller.

If you don't it will chew the gears up right quick.............

What Ford vehicle did the '89 engine come from? If it was a truck it's definitely not a roller, if from a car it could be though...

I was told it came out of a 89 Cougar. OK, I sound like an idiot here. I've never looked inside a roller engine before so what exactly am I looking for when I remove the intake?

ok, I pulled the intake off the 89 and it looks nothing like your pic. Looks like your typical older model engines so I'm assuming I'm good to go with the distributor swap?

Well...this little project turned out to be a wasted weekend. I pulled one of the heads off of the donor 302 and it is full of WATER!! So now I have to reinstall the old engine and find another donor. Thankfully the guy I bought it from is a good friend of mine and is going to give me my money back for it. Even he didn't know it was water logged. What a wasted weekend

Big time. There was about 1/2 a cup of water in one cylinder and two of them had huge amounts of rust build up on the walls. To the point there were rust "bubbles". The last engine I built that was like that was a 429 and it had to go .060 over before it even cleared the rust damage. Very disappointing... (
