Hi everyone, I have a 2001 Ranger XLT with a bad bearing, what are the chances of this letting go? Will the wheel fall off while I'm driving? I am having it replaced this weekend, but I need to drive it or do I?
Thanks in advance of your expertise...
Front or rear wheel brg. ? If it is the front and you know it is the inner bearing
I would drive it slowly and cautiously, the outer I would park it, the outer bearing carries little weight and acts more as a guide but if it it lets go the hub starts to pull out. The brakes and rotor will hold things together but it makes a mess and
ends up costing more then taking the bus. Rear will make it to weekend just go slower than normal.
Kotzy
I had an outer wheel bearing let go on my El Camino once. I was lucky as I was only a few blocks away from my house. After it broke I had no breaks for the most part. Best to fix ASAP.
hammered.. I doubt seriously you're in any danger of losing your wheel.. it all depends on how bad the bearing is and how long it's been making noise. If it's been doing this for months.. yeah.. don't drive it.
But if it just started.. I dunno I wouldn't drive it any more than I have to, but I'd still drive it.

Good luck
My wife's Durango is in the shop for the same damn thing, she's driving mine while hers is in the shop. Good thing she works maybe 3.5 miles from home.
Thanks All!

While your Durango is in the shop, have the ball joints checked....Durango's have a terrible reputation for ball joint problems!!
hey everybody
much like hellhammered, I'm having a bearing problem with my 01 4x4. It's making a deafening roar and vibration at pretty much all speeds. I'm taking it to ATD today to check out.
Anybody know the labor cost of doing this? It looks like the part is a couple hundred, but I want to make sure that this place won't screw me. I'm new to PHX, and still looking for a good mechanic.
Has anybody gone to ATD? (central ave & deer valley) Or do you know of reputable mechanics?
Thanks
