i heared the 4.0 out of a ford explor. i dont know what all changes that you would have to make but i know my buddy was talking about putting one in his 90 bii
I think the 4.0 uses the same mounts, but it ends there. All the 4.0's wiring will need to be used, too IIRC. could go w/5.0. James Duff, Advance Adapters, and L&L are some conversion companies. 2.9's IMO are junk. Aluminum heads and iron block make for problems. My BII went through 3 motors before I bought it, and I had to put another in it. IIRC it had 180,000 miles on it, all highway.
umm...well the 2.9 I have has cast iron heads....and I love those motors...but at any rate, go w/ a 4.0, the motor mounts are very similar, all you need to do is just grind the locating pin off the rubber mount, so all you have is a bolt on both sides. the bell pattern is the same, you may need to either shave the 4.0 fan, use the 4.0 rad and shroud, or put the 2.9 fan on(if it will fit that water pump) and use brackets and wiring and computer from the 4.0. You may also need to change some wires where the motor wiring goes to the cab wiring on the drivers side fender. I've done many swaps w/ those rangers and it's not too bad to figure out that wiring as long as you have the wiring diagragms. and if you don't someone here can probly help you!
BTW I forgot what side the rad. hoses are on the 4.0, but IF it's opposite the 2.9 rad, than 2.3L Rangers, and maybe the carb'd ones had the rad. the opposite way. and for the record, I used a 2.9 rad, when I swapped a car'b 302 in my ranger. kept it cool enough for me the 2.9 had the same hp as the 302, but not near the torque.
