'76 Ranchero GT

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Sep-02 AT 11:07 PM (EST)]hey y'all, hope i fit in here, i seen a coupla '75s, so im guessin i do....
as my topic says, i have '76 GT that a good friend gave me, but it had an engine fire, nothin major, new carb, dist. and smaller stuff, wiring, vacuum hoses etc...
some previous owner installed a diff. column and bench seat, and i was wondering if anybody had any pics of their 75 or 75 seat so i know what to look for?
it has a 460/C6 in it 9" rear, i dunno much about these big vehicles, can't find any books either
p.s. before it had the fire, i drove it once, and did it ever have some git up and go!
all i wanna do is restore it to fact. condition :-)
edit: from '73 thru '76 the body didnt vhange did it?

I am in a similar situation in that my 1973 (which has 1972 front clip) has a non-factory seat which is comfy but too big for me to get my knees under the steering wheel. I will be putting an original seat and a tilt column in it. I have two tilt columns and will have one restored soon.

There are a few books around but nothing to help with the seat. You should search for a Torino seat - easier to find and the same. The Ranchero was mostly the same 1973 to 1976. From 1973 to 1974 they changed the front grill, tilt column, power windows, and substituted the 460 for the 429. From 1974 to 1975 they added a catalytic convertor, dropped the manual transmission, added power door locks, dropped the 351C and added the 351M. From 1975 to 1976 they dropped the Sport Flight Bench seat (I believe still offering another bench).

I do not believe the body changed from 1973 to 1976, but it is possible there are some subtle changes in the lines.

'76 Ranchero GT

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Sep-02 AT 04:03 AM (EST)]i think just about any seats from a '72-'79 ranchero, torino, cougar, t-bird, ltd,... will fit just like the original ones. my '75 ranchero has the split bench/bucket seats, where the bottom part is like a bench seat except split in the middle. the top part looks more like bucket seats, and there are separate armrests on each side which can be flipped up for a passenger in the middle. my '77 cougar has the exact same seats, except they're covered in leather instead of "comfort vinyl" and the driver side has power adjustment - sounds different, but the frame for the seats is the same. my dad used to have a '79 ranchero that had more of a bench seat - it was solid all the way across the bottom, but the upper seatbacks were separate like the ones in my '75 and in the cougar, except lower backs - and one big armrest instead of two separate ones.

anyway, my point is that the front seats for all the "regular sized" fomoco cars appear to be interchangable and there are a lot of different styles - so if you find some that you like better than the original ones, there is a good chance you can swap them. the hard part will be finding some in decent condition!

ps - although the '73 front end LOOKS like the '74-'76 except for the grille, it is different. i think it has the same hood & fenders as a '72. i want to convert my '75 to a '73 front clip...

A 460 should fit with factory mounts. I could be wrong, but I think the frames didn't change from '72-79.
