I have a 1986 F-250 (460) 4x4 man. trans.. My gear shift lever came loose, I took the boot off and I think the gears have to be inline a certain way before I stab the shifter back in. Can you tell me what position they should be in? Why is it coming loose? Just need to be tightened more or is something wrong?
Thanks,
HastyG
I had this happen once before, if you just stab it in you can get 2-3 gears in, but if you take a stout and long screwdriver and pry the gears to a certain position then you get them all. I just can't remeber the position you have to line them up. Guess I'll go to a transmission shop and ask them. Thanks!
The shift forks will create a nice rectangle when the transmission is in neutral so the end of the shift lever can get to the three different forks. If a set of forks is in gear then the end of the shifter won't be able to move to any of the three forks like it should. Just make sure the shifter will be able to reach and actuate the three forks, stick the shifter in with a couple bolts and try each gear to see if it will go in like it should (may have to have the engine running asnd let the clutch out a hair).
If it seems normal then it is. It's pretty obvious when you have a shifter in incorrectly.
When a shifter is in correctly the end of the shifter is captured by a single fork and cannot actuate any othe gears until the current gear is deselected.
If the shifter is not in correctly, most likely the transmission will act like it is stuck in gear and you may or may not be able to get it into a different gear at the same time. If you get it in two gears at the same time, you let out the clutch and the engine dies.
Other times if the shifter is in incorrectly the transmission may be in neutral but you can't get it in gear. If this happens then the shifter will also be in a weird position like hitting the seat or dash.
Thank you Paden for the advice. I'm going out to the truck this morning to try and work on it (15 miles away) I stopped and asked at a couple repair shops yesterday, everyone has different answer. I should be able to figure it tho I hope. Thanks again! I will let you know how it goes.
