I just recently bought a 1990 f150 xlt lariat, 302 4x4. I'm trying to figure out the gearing of the rear end, and how many spline it is. I checked the tag on the rear and the top set of numbers is S815D. I got that this is a 8.8 rear, but i was wondering what the gear ratio is. If anyone could help me that would be great! thanks!
tage reads: S815D

That is a rare bird indeed. You don't see very many 4.10's with limited slips from the factory - in fact, I don't think I've ever seen one. If it were me, I'd verify that the front axle has the same or similar ratio. There will a tag hanging off the front as well.
You can tell it has 4.10's because of the first few digits in the second line of the tag: 4L10
The "L" in the middle means limited slip. The numbers are obviously the ratio.
neener neener I have a 4.10 LS course the clutch packs are shot... so what good does it do me right? -myers
It's pretty easy and cheap to replace the clutch packs and get the thing performing as good or better than new.... Yes.. even the diff can be hot rodded!!
ok, I checked the tag on the front diff, and it says 4.09 on the top line. Would that be a match? Do you know what spline the rear and front would be?
yup. they usually go 1 off between front and rear to make the 4 wheel drive work a little better. that is why you get "binding" when driving on hardpack in 4X4.
i don't know that there is a way of knowing the spline count without pulling the axles and looking at them. most 4wd's are 31 and 2wd are 28 or if lucky 31
