Tranny Prob?
For background , I have a '97 2.3 with 116k miles on it.
For the past few weeks I've noticed what I can only describe as a spinning-whirring noise that I believe is coming from the M50D transmission. I can hear it when it's in gear, but if I put it in neutral, the sound fades away, only to return when I put it back in gear. I had the transmission fluid changed out last week and it's still making the noise.
I also had the clutch/slave and master cylinder changed out about two months ago.
Thanks for your help!
The noise occurs while I'm driving. If I take it out of gear and coast, it fades away. But once I put it back in gear, the noise returns. I'll still hear it coasting up to a stoplight with the clutch depressed.
Hope that makes sense.

Questions:
Do you have a supercab?
Do you experience a loud thud when accelerating slowly or when coming to a slow stop?
Does this spinning-whirring noise seem to happen when the gas peddle is being pressed, then stops once your foot comes off the gas/peddle?
Have you noticed any oil leaking from the differential. Coming out of the end closest to the engine?

Also, there are several recent discussions in this forum you can retrieve with a search.
Kotzy: The noise was there before and after the flud change, so I don't think that's the issue.
Thanks for helping me narrow this down!

Hey pgw85706!
It's funny you should mention it, as I've been searching and searching this forum for people with similar or the same problem. That's when I came across the pdf you were so nice to post. I thought forsure that would be the fix, as many posts sounded very similar to my problem.
Thus I perform the TSB with high high hopes, but infact it seemed to make the thud louder, and happen more often. It was as if the new grease allowed for more lateral motion. I think.
It's funny because I was just writing up my new post entitled "Leaking Diff. Tranny Problem?", that's when I saw this new one, and just had to post.
Last thing. Cause I feel really bad hi-jacking this topic. Before I bought the truck the Engine had been rebuild and tranny replaced. It wasn't done buy a professional, so I'm wondering if there could be something there. Also it was suggested I get my 2-piece drive shaft balanced. Not sure if that's a good idea.
hmm.

*When you changed the tranny fluid, what came out along with oil? Also, the TSB applies only to supercabs and the noise addressed by the TSB is not like the one you are describing, hence you can scratch that from the list.
Atf became the replacement solution, still used today. Problem with Atf is it's a hydraulic fluid and very thin, it's been blamed many times for burning out bearings.
I went through all of these, and now run 5W30 Syntech, as per my tranny shops recommendations. Quietest tranny I've ever had and have yet to have problems after 50000 KMS
I would look into the bearing idea, if it's really the problem get to it ASAP. It's cheaper to change bearings than to replace gears and syncros.
