351c Timing Chain Play

I measure 1/2 inch of slack in the chain between the gears. I checked out the dist when I move the timing gears and I turn about 1/8 inch before the distributer moves. I'm thinking this should be OK but the motors out and on the floor. Just trying to cover all of my bases.

slack is measured when all the slack is on one side of the gears. rotate the crank so that the timing chain pulls tight on one side. then place a straight edge against the slack side of the timing gears, and push the slack of timing chain with a ruler. you are now measuring the slack.
is the cam sprocket aluminum and have nylon around the outside teeth? is the nylon chipping and coming apart?
