I purchesed a used 460 to replace the one I have. The Timing chain had about 1 inch of play so I took off the timing cover and it did not have the oil slinger on the crank. The rest of the motor looks good bearings cylinder walls cam pistons the premature chain wear was it beacuse the oil slinger was missing or is the slinger not needed. Thanks
Sorry I do not know the answer to your question, however I do know that with some after market timing chain set's it's recommended not to use the oil slinger by the chain manufacture. _Ed
The slinger does two things in theory.... Stops the oil from leaking through the timing cover seal due to wicking and helps promote lubrication of the timing set. IMOP it sounds more like someone reused the old timing set when the engine was rebuilt. Now comes a question of what kind of cam gear does it have? One with nylon gears or metal. The metal gears take longer to wear out vurse nylon ones.
They used metal gears. I went ahead and put a new chain in and sealed it back up without the slinger I tore my other 460 apart to see if it had one in there and it did not. I know that motor has 100,000 miles on it so hopefully I do not have any trouble out of the fresh motor if anybody has opinions let me know still curious I put new front seal hopefully everything will be fine.
I currently have two 460's in 77 F-150's, Neither one of them have the slinger installed. My green one I have had together for a year and half and have had no trouble from it at all. and it's not babied in the least. I used Ford motorsport parts in that one and the chain set came with instructions to discard the oil slinger. I have just finished the 460 in my mud truck and it don't have one either, it didn't have one when I took it apart and I used an edelbrock chain set with this one and it had instructions that recomended not useing the slinger also. I have replaced both front seals in them during the rebuild's and have had zero trouble so far. -Ed
Thanks for the positive news I was not sure how important the oil slinger was. I was going to go to the junkyard and find one but know I am going to let it go. Thanks
