my brothers 00 uses a gp module while mine still uses the normal relay. someone said earlier that they started puting the module in ca trucks around 01.
So the PCM is measuring voltage across an inline resistor or 'shunt' coming up with the bank voltage? or is it just measuring a parallel point in each bank? if it is measuring the voltage across a resistor then yes, I can see that one or more GPs is bad, if it is parallel and you have bad GPs, you would not be setting a low voltage as you'd actually have a higher voltage reading.
not sure. all i know is that im throwing the codes 1391 and 1393. i havent ripped the valve covers off for all i know it could just be the wiring undernearth there all messed up. i got this code when i finally fixed my relay. or it could be the battteries causing it cause amiller said that if the other side of ther terminal reads lower then 39 amps it will throw a code.
I am familiar with the shunt so disregard my module comment. AFAIK, the shunt is a glorified one post terminal. Look at how it is wired. All to the same post but seperate takeoffs. The GPR is still the same. No news to you but I'm clear now. Perhaps Ca has a PCM code for GP probs but mine does not that I know of. I would say ohm the wires at the same time you check the UVC harnesses.
i actually tested the ohms on each ppost on that shunt. and they tested within range which i think was .1 .2.
amiller sent me a email with this.
On California vehicles the glow plug monitor system is part of the On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) System.
The glow plug monitor (GPM) system is designed to find failed glow plugs or failed wiring in the glow plug
system.
The GPM system uses a low resistance shunt to conduct current to the left and right bank glow plugs.
Three sensing wires measure the voltage drops across the shunt when the glow plugs are operating. A failure in the glow plug system will set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
it really sucks cause, its never cold enough to even use the gp, yet i have this ses light on all the time cause of this. im thinkin its gonna be uvc harness hopefully jsut unplugged cause i dont want to have to replace the glow plugs.
P1391 Glow Plug Circuit Low Input Bank No. 1(Right)
P1393 Glow Plug Circuit Low Input Bank No. 2 (Left)
Yeah duh, from the home page. If you have replaced the GPR, batteries are good, voltage is good across the second terminal on GPR, you need to Ohm the GP leads and/or check the UVC harness connections.

Not true, if it was not cold enough, that system would never cycle and there would be no problem. I hear what you are saying, annoying and not needed really. Just trying to help make the idiot light go away. Maybe disconnect and clean wires/connections and reconnect.
i was in tahoe over christmas and the gpr was toasted, i tested it the day before i left and now power on the other post. anyways it snowed one night and was around 10 degrees over night. fired right up with no glow plugs, figured if she could start in that situation with out them id never need them. hahah
anyways, how difficult is it get these valve covers off, looks like alot of crap on teh passenger side blocks it. if i crack these things open do i need to replace the gaskets? is oil gonna get all over the exhaust manifolds, what kind of mess am i lookin at crackin these things open. if anyone knows of a procedure write up on gettin thes covers off a link would be appreciated, ive seen the glow plugs procedure but cant seem to find one on gettin the valve covers off. thanks
