So please refresh me on the tranny mods you have planned. I don't know what was mentioned earlier.
It is a John Woods set-up. 6.0 converter, his special VB, new ported & blueprinted front pump, think he said shift kit as well.
so it seems as though no one like the idea of going to mercon V? I have never heard of syn trans fluid having too much lubricity and make an older trans start slipping .
thanks for all the replys, can someone chime in here that has swapped to MerconV?
Moniter the fluids all the time. I learned the hard way and had to buy a new tranny since I didn't change the fluid early enough. I now know what "burnt" fluid smells like...
I need a scientist.......... can someone analyse these numbers and tell me which one is better. I have narrowed my decision to Royal Purple, Mobile 1, Schaeffers. I couldnt find any properties on the Schaeffers oil. here are resullts for the others

I am not sure if the numbers are the higher the better or lower the better! Also does anyone know what the properties are for Schaeffers.
I hate to say this, but at 750,000 miles all I do is drain what fluid comes out then refill with Mercon and add a quart of Lucas. I haven't changed filter lately because the Quick Lube shop stripped about half of the treads out. I do tow!!
4844, yes the Syn is more slippery then the Mercon, and if you have 'more' power there is a good chance you can overpower the frictions and get them to slip, A moderately modded truck CAN and will slip the frictions, that is one reason you see so many of these trans go...because of abuse..
I would not use Mercon V as it is not compatitable with the friction clutch adhesive. So does this mean you cant-NO, does this mean the trans will blow up..NO. I wouldn't do it...Remember when Ford specified NOT to use Mercon V in the 4R100's? Read the owners manual if you dont believe me.
FWIW- I use amsoil/Schaefers Syn ATF in my 400HP 4R100 stock trans, take it to the strip as well, I still have the OEM clutches and OEM TC. No slippage here....YET.
4844, yes the Syn is more slippery then the Mercon,
If the synthetic is more slippery than MERCON, it can't have a MERCON rating. Part of the MERCON rating is how slippery the fluid is. If it is too slippery, or not slippery enough it won't say MERCON on the bottle.
so is royal purple and schaffers not synthertics? i could hace swore they were! also schaffers says it is compatible with Mercon, Mercon V and a number of other various ratings. also the RP is the same way.
I run RP in my race trannies and plan on switching my PSD over to it pretty soon. I have found it lowered my race temps by 10 degrees and if it will do that with the abuse I put that tranny through just think what it will do to my 4R100.
Also RP can be purchased at NAPA, and RP is also a site sponser.
