As mentioned prior I am getting ready to do a T/C swap, add a 6.0 cooler, valve body, etc. I want some recommendations on new trans fluid. I have always used Mobil 1 Syn. in all my other vehicles with no problems. I have read a lot about Schaffers oil, where can I get it and is it superior to others on the market like Mobil 1? Also I dont have the owners manual to my truck, so I am unsure of what type to get as well I.E. Mercon, mercon V, ATF, etc.... Thanks for the help! BTW truck is an early 99.
I got my fluid flushed not to long ago. I was going to use Royal Purple Synthetic but was recomended by someone on this site to go with the Schaffers and couldn't be happier. It was around 30k miles sence the last flush and now my tranny shifts way better. Its hard to explain on the internet but its just smoooother. I ordered the Schaffers Syn Trans Fluid from Beans Diesel Performance in a 5 gal drum. You could use this LINK if you want to do it yourself. I just took my truck into my diesel mech because i didn't have any time.
huh....dont guess anyone here has ever changed transmission fluid..... not even the post *****s want to chime in....this is strange......
Hey, watch that. There's been plenty of tranny lube changes. Believe it or not, I have not changed mine. If it makes you feel better, I have seen a lot of Schaffers syn used because that is what BTS recommends. Give it some time buddy. It is Sunday night.
i was hoping for some reaction out of that.... heck i started this on the 20th and only got 1 reply. i still am unsure of what type to use. I have no owners manul to tell. a mechanic told me to use Mercon V since that is what Ford is going to. Is Mercon V safe to use? Is it superior to what was originally reccomended?
Do you plan to tow heavy? If not, then mercon is the way to go. I will likely get flamed for that but you have to think about these things. Unless you think you can overheat the mercon V, (yes mercon V), then go with that. Of course, the latest from FoMoCo is that mercon V is fully compatible with Mercon but just recently there was a big hullabaloo about making sure you drain all the old.
Now they say it will mix. What do you think? I will be flushing all of mine. I may go synthetic and I may not. Likely not but who knows?
I went to the local autoparts store and asked for Mercon ATF!
The sheila scratched her head (I swearI saw knits jump when she did!)...and looked at the ceiling! She got a book out of the brands they sell and found the recommended one for my brand, year, model, PSD auto trans!
It was Castrol Dextron 111, from memory so I bought a 5 gallon can and a one gallon plastic bottle for luck! ($180 Aust later) I was good to go!
Seems to have worked so far (200 miles this weekend!). Changes are smoother, and seems quieter!
I'm happy!
I've been told that BTS suggest synthetic is too slippery for the clutch packs and just lets em wear out faster!
i do tow a lot probably %80 of the time, but it is usually never very heavy only 6k +/-. but there may come a day when i do to something heavier.... i am doing a complete T/C swap, VB, 6.0 cooler, front pump, etc.... so I am looking for the best stuff to go with. thanks for the reply's, keep 'em coming!
I thought they recommended schaffers. I could be wrong.
At any rate, I submit this for your review MAGNETRON.
brian told me when i got my VB from him not to use synthetic cause on an old trans it is too slick and will make the trans start to slipp sooner...he does use schaffers in his new trans that he builds...
I have loooked at these before, however I elected to go with the bypass style filter from LIPD in which I have some idea of the micron filter measurements and the safety of a bypass if things go wrong!
I don't want restriction of the fluid and I do want it as clean as possible!
Can't filter much with it tho if it doesn't get here soon - ordered Dec 17 and the postal pixies in Canada seem to have put it on a sailboat from there to here by the look!!
I guess It will get here one day! Probably the day the transmission dies!
