So my truck has heat when its warm out and i can get the truck warm enough. But now that it is getting cold out the heat is not so great and the truck barely gets above the line above c on the guage. Should i be looking at changing my thermostat or maybe getting some kind of radiator cove or grill blocker? If so whats a good source for that??

What is the outside ambiant temp when you say cold? Here we are seeing daytime highs in the 20's and mornings close to 0º F and my PSD really can throw out the heat. If you are looking at temps equal or warmer, I would suspect a thermostat that is stuck open... not good for a diesel that likes to run HOT! In that case, I would get an aftermarket 203º thermostat and a new thermostat housing. Many perfer the billet housing but when I replaced mine, I used a new Ford housing and it is holding up fine, probably because they don't use a lot of corrosive salts here in Colorado.
Another possibility is that a previous owner installed a shut-off valve in one or both of your heater hoses. Look under the hood on the passergers side for anything that may look like a manual or vacuum actuated valve in the heater lines.
If no-go on any of the above, a heavy piece of cardboard behind the grill, in front of the radiator could help. Kwik says his holds up well in rainy Seattle.
my egts up almost 200 deg with the cold front on. and blows hot air in 15 min.
even had neg.- 38 deg. a couple weeks ago and heater blew hot after about 25 min.
Yep, probably thermostat and check the cutoff Guzzle mentioned. Also, not to insult you but make sure your coolant is topped off and there are no leaks.
i agree with guzzle its 12 to 15 below 0 here after 15 to 20 minute warm up my temp gauges move up a little and is blowing warm air.. i go to store down the road to get a cup of coffe get back in cab and its toasty.. my heat blows me out of the cab be for i get to work..i love that 203 stat..
You have a broken thermostat if your guage is only barely rising like that.
The worst part is that is won't open fully in the summertime and you will severly overheat your engine if you load it up.
Get it fixed now before the weather warms up and head off some (potentially) very expensive and preventable repairs.
Ok thats what I thought I figured it was thermostat related, just wasn't sure if the engine really likes to be cold, Whats the deal with replacing the housing too. Do they go bad and why?? The coolant level is normal and there are no cut offs in the water lines. and the outside temps are in the 0's -20's and yes im in colorado too! Thanks for the help.
The housing is a stamped steel unit that rusts and may even corrode inside if coolant maintenance has not been kept up. It is wise to replace it if it looks marginal when replacing the thermostat. Some move to a billet unit because the stock stamped steel one is kinda weak. At any rate, I highly recommend using permatex red in addition to the gasket when replacing the thermostat or you just may be going back in there. JMO.
Edit: you've been driving that for a week plus like that?
Can you guys cut it out with the cold & snow business already?
I'm suffering a damn heatwave conditions here!
It hasn't been under 40C (104f) for a week, I'm hot, bothered, sweaty and tired of the heat & lack of sleep! Next one I hear biatching about the cold or snows gonna cop a serve! Your cold go put another jumper on!
What do I do? - yeah swealter! Sheesh, rub it in why don't you??
With any luck will get some cloud for a few days, but bye next Saturday it'll be 40 again! Send some snow my way fed ex will ya!
wow it's cold here this morning all this snow is killing me (actually there is no snow by me unfortunately), but at least I don't live in Australia or in the south where it gets to be way to hot in the summer. sorry Flywest I couldn't resist. Don't cop a serve on me (whatever that is) if it's like copping a feel, sorry i'm not like that. Maybe some GM owner will endulge you . Seriously I hope the weather starts to treat you better.
I just walked out to the mailbox and froze my nutz off and my ears are ice cubes. Temps are going up though, it's up to 10 now with a -9 wind chill. I think I'm gonna let the old girl sit for the day and sit here and mess with people crying about the heat.
What other advantages are there to the 203* stat?? I'm guessing that since it lets the engine get warmer that the oil heats up quicker, therefore kiling the ebpv sooner??
