Here are the directions I followed and they got my straight pipe on just fine.......
1) 28 inch piece of 3.5" pipe.
2) Crawl under the truck and remove the clamp from the front of the stock muffler and all the hangers back to the end and drag all that out.
3) Take a sawzaw and cut the tail pipe just behind the muffler.
4) Cut the pipe in front of the muffler as close as you can get to the muffler and when you reinstall it, rotate it 180 degrees so it points up, and then you may have to grind off the alingment dowel on the pipe ahead of the clamp.
5) Cut the 3.5" pipe the same length as the muffler.
6) In my case I went to a local muffler shop and got a 28-inch piece of pipe and he swelled (swegded) the ends up to fit over the 3-½ inch pipe at both ends and I just clamped it really tight to prevent leaks. I then put a hanger on the straight pipe just to help support it and used 3 ½ clamps through out the mod.
I doubt you'll have trouble with police. If anything it'd be from the sound, but it's not going to be that loud where it'll be drawing attention. Besides, if you did the gutted muffler, the sound would still be what attracts them and what you might get spoken to about... it's not like the cops are gonna be just randomly looking under your truck for a muffler to be there... it'll be for the sound. But again, I doubt you'll have a problem. And, you can point out, the turbocharger is technically a muffler.
I also think the flex pipe might be a tad cheezy looking, but it'll work fine. I think the way I posted in the second link is ideal, and is easy to do. Be sure to use 3.5" pipe, not 1" like your dad was thinking of.
Yea haha, My dad and i are gonna go tomorrow and try to find a piece of pipe lol. If we cant find anything im sure theres a RACECORT around with some 1 inch flex lol!!!!!
If you use Accu-seal clamps, you do not need to flare the ends. Just butt them up to one another, and tighten the accu-seal clamp down as far as it goes. It forms a perfect seal if tightened correctly and it actually stretches over the exhaust pipes.
OK i ended up buying a 28 inch piece of Stainless Flex Tubing from a local Big rig repair shop and the Accu- Seal Clamps. Everything went well other than the clap that was on the back of the muffler, I was hoping that it was welded to the pipe. So i made my own Hanger. Works well and sounds Beautiful! I did take some baseline EGT temps. With the muffler on, at an idle i was around 250 Degrees. With the Cruise on at 55 it was around 450 -500 degrees. I did all the work and after reving it up a little and a test drive my EGT's werent much different at all. Im waiting for the truck to cool down and il make another run and see what its at. Thanks guys
It's cool that your doing the pre/post muffler delete EGT obs. I had a banks exhaust with the banks monster muffler and did the same kind of test you were doing when i was on my way to the muffler shop to have them weld in a strait pipe. I didn't really notice much change in EGT's after the strait pipe, maybe a little like 25-50 degs, but the truck sounds alot better and i think it did lower my temps when towing a little more than it did when just driving around unloaded.
Yea i just did another test, At an idle it was on the high side of 190 degrees almost 200, So thats a pretty good change and at 55 it was about a 70-80 degree drop. Its hard to do because its somewhat hilly.
OMG i love the sound of it!!!!!!!! So does my dad lol when i started up he had a smile from ear to ear! lol. Whats the chances of those accu seal clamps of breaking? I need to tighten the back one a little bit more im just worried about it snaping.
