new to Y-blocks

my buddy and i hooked up with a 59 F100 for $200.
it has a 292 and a 4 speed on the floor. anyway, she hasnt turned over in at least 12 years.
got some questions.
- i have heard Y's have oiling problems, what should i look for? can we pull dist. and valve covers and spin oil pump to check proper oiling?
- where is block and head casting dates?
- are basic engine parts available thru popular auto stores? gaskets, t-stats etc.
- not looking for all-performance here, just a reliable ol Y!
- is there a "how to rebuild your Y-block" book available?

we're more familiar with FE's, and this seems pretty similar.
thanks for all your tips.

Search the Y block forum as we just discussed most of your questions yesterday.
Go to Ford-y-block.com for casting info. John has all the info and ya can print it out. And yes the bus or Truck engine is the top of the line.

The oil passage blockage and a couple others in the Y Block
forum will answer some of your questions. Read though and get back to us.

Wink

The Y block is what replaced the L or Flat head engine in 54 though the mid 60's. It was used in everything cars trucks boats And heavy trucks. Very universal and still easy to get parts for at your locale Napa store. I have even seen twins in a rail fuel Dragster. They can be built to be radical or a daily driver that will run with the Big Dogs between lights. But the sound. Oh what a sound. Comparable to an old knucklehead or Indian motor cycle in as much as ya know it's sound from a block or more away. A slightly modded un muffled one in an Effie or Slick will do things to the pit of yer stomic like the first kiss at school behind the Buss shed. Go to a car and truck show an check em out. Ford-y-block.com will tell ya a lot more than I can. Dennis Carpenter or John Mummert's sites will give ya all the info and parts ya could ever need. Thanks for asking as It makes me want to go tear into one of mine as she needs it before the 4th of July Parade or the poor folks behind me will need to have oxygen masks or they will send me to the tail again. And she don't like that at all. Good luck and I hope ya find and save one.

I subscribe to a couple of magazines. Y-Block Magazine of witch John Mummert is a contributor. And Fomoco Times plus I get a catalog called Ford Reproduction Parts Store. WWW.fordpartsstore.com. All have awesome articles and a wealth of info.
