The other day I ran across an article on the internet called "dieselmann's page--help for ford diesel owners & technicians ". Has any of you ever heard of it, it seems to have a great deal of useful information. One thing that I noticed is that he says many ford diesels, including mine, may have the wrong oil dip stick. He says " some early 95 and older engines were equipped with a 12 quart dip stick which needs to be filled to just over the word FULL, or replaced with the correct part---ford p/n F4TZ-6750-E for F series". I was told that my truck holds 11 quarts with a filter & when I do it this way the stick shows FULL, am I running my engine low on oil? I went to a ford parts site & searched for the PN, it is a good #
It is a very good site. But as you said "Some" is the primary word. Look in the diesel suppliment manual with your truck for proper oil capacity. From memory I believe it says 11qt + 1 qt for oil filter. Change your own oil using listed qts in manual. Run engine for 10 min. Shut it off. Wait 10 min or longer. Pull dipstick and see where you are. You'll probably find you are at full mark. So don't worry. I believe on the dipstick - the hi-low range is 2 qts. My truck not home right now so can't look for sure.
My 83 6.9 takes 11 quarts to be on the full mark and it is the original dipstick.
You do need to go off of what the service manual says. Don't get in the habit and assume the dipstick is correct all vehicles.
I use to work on alot of 6.2's and 6.5's. People would bring box trucks and vans in and complain about the rear main and or the front main leaking. Alot of the time I would drain 9 or 10 quarts out of the motor and put 7 quarts back in it and find that sometimes the oil wouldn't even be on the stick because it was so kinked up. Alot of the time the leaks would stop.
You wouldn't have a kinked up problem on your truck because it isn't 6 feet long but just a thing to remember in your travels.
Thats is why Rosco called Enos a dipstick, sometimes they aren't that smart.
I've meaning to mark the full line with white out or paint[?]....seems lately, its been difficult to see....must have something to do with ozone layer or climate change or something like that.
