Hey! I'm looking for the torque specs for a 400 main and rod caps. I'm not sure what year the engine is, but the truck it is out of is a 77. The code on the block is D7TE-A-Z-B Im not sure if that says what year the engine is or not. I'd appreciate your help!

It's a 77 the first letter mean decade d=1970-79 b=1950-59 c=1960-69 e=1980-89...
second letter year of decade 7=7
third, car line,t is for truck.(ex;a=ford d=falcon z=mustang)
fourth engineering group(a=chassis,b=body,e=engine)
i have the book high performance ford engine part interchange.i hope this can help you.
Thanks a lot for your help! Just one more question. The Chilton manuel says that the main cap torque for the 1977 400m is only 35 pounds?? This seems really unreasonable cause every other spec on the page is about what Mustang81 said which seems right. (Chilton manuels always caused me grief) Anyway is that torque spec true? I've gotten plenty of different answers so i'm kinda confused
Thanks!
I took those number in the book ford performance by pat ganahl.it was for the 351 cleveland/400 cid bolt torque specification.Did your motor is stock or performance? The book give 2 torques spec, one for stock and one for performance. The one i gave to you was for stock.performance is connecting rod bolt 55 main, bering caps 95-105.In fact, it's just the connecting rod bolts torque have different number.
torque specs for BOSS engines should not be used on standard 335 series engine parts. the BOSS rods are different and have different bolts in them. over-torquing standard rods will distort them and invite failure. if rods are re-sized, you want to know what they were torqued at during the re-sizing process. then use that same value when assembling. using the BOSS spec on heads does the same thing, it will distort the cylinder wall and cause ring sealing problems at the top of the cylinder.
