The only 5sd they would let me get in 88 Bronco was the mazda. I had 175000 on it when sold 2 slave cylinders one clutch. And had been know to drag race with it on weekends. (I'd go to watch and then ?) The ZF is stronger either will fit. let us know what find out.
I can get the trans/transfer case and pedals or whatever else I need from one for $75. I know the guy swapped in the trans, so I guess it could be either one.
Are there any common problems to the M5 units??? I know my Ranger's used to need the plastic shifter bushing when I bought them at about 120,000. Just looking for some input. I would prefer the ZF, but for that kind of deal I can't hardly pass it up.
The ZF was actually optional for a year or two (though very few people has it from the factory) but unless you *know* that you have a ZF, assume you have a M5OD. They can leak fluid and that can lead to problems.
I've got an '89 with the 300 I-6 with an M5OD, aside from having to replace the clutch recently I haven't had any problems with the tranny, although I did go through and replace the shifter bushings, and the slave cylinder when I did the clutch. But after 210k miles, I'd hardly call that a problem. As for being weak, I haven't really noticed any weakness.
It's definately a M5OD. Just pulled it out last night. The shifter bushings definately need replaced. I'll probably put new master/slave cylinders on it as I don't want to have to replace them 100 miles after install. Especially after I bolt the heavy @s$ NP205 to the back of it...
