My 97 Expy XLT 4x4 is having some issue that I have never experienced. Upon take off, a thumping sound comes from the rear and possibly the tranny of the truck. It feels like the tranny is pulling hard. Most of the noise and the pulling feeling seem to come from the rear. I thought it was the rear diff but it also makes the pulling and thumping noise in AWD mode and in reverse. Another thing I noticed is when I make a full circle turn either way, the noise and thumping is more frequent.
I have new tires (bought about 4 months ago). I took off every tire and nothing seems to be broken or loose. In mid December, I took it in to the dealer to take care of a O2 sensor problem and the 4x4 not engaging. The 4x4 was resolved by a new module. The O2 needed a pipe fitting because the heater/AC condensation was leaking on it and it kept causing the "check engine" light to come on. They also did a tune up, oil change and filter, and all fluids topped off. The tranny is full of fluid. By the way, my truck has over 206k miles. Rear diff fluid was changed about 100k miles ago.
Someone please help if you can. Thanks.
i'm not sure it has an LSD. it happens when going straight but more often when turning. u joints sound like a possibility but it wouldn't make sense if the sound is more frequent when turning.
Maybe you have one or two flat spots on the bearings in one or both of your
CV joints. I've had this same type of sound with another vehicle, replaced the
joints and all was well. Something to look into, good luck.
hey everyone, i took my expy into the dealer and they said that the rear diff was now completely out. they opened it up and everything was broken. pieces of metal all over the place. $2700 to rebuild it! plus anything else that they might find! i'm not sure what to do. it has 208k+ miles and has been great to me and the family.
Seems like you can get an entirely new axle for that price. I haven't checked but you might check into ARB or Currie or even a local 4X4 shop that does these things.
i'm going to look into these and some local shops to see what i can get. anyone in or around san jose, ca that can point me to a local shop, would be helpful. thanks everyone!
I have a question about your 4x4 issue you had, i have a 98 Navigator that is not engaging into 4 wheel drive. After researching the forums it looks like a solinod or vacuum leak could be the cause. Was that it in your case? How much did the dealer charge you for the repair if you don't mind me asking and if you don't mind explaining the problem in a little more detail i would really appreciate it. Thank you for your help.
And would would recomend a junk yard replacement as well, some will actually guarentee it for a period of time too.
