For me the issue would be the price between the two. If the salvage yard transfer case is considereably cheaper than a new/remanufactured, I would take my chances with the salvage yard one. Then put some synthetic fluid in it and hope it lasts a while.
well, I went with a complete rearend swap out of a salvage yard. Santa Clara Truck Wreckers had exactly what I needed for only $750. Ford dealer cleaned it up, put in fresh fluid and the additive and installed it along with new rear shocks for another $900.
Audichopper, as far as my 4x4 not engaging, I was just turning the switch and noticed that the light on the instrument cluster was not turning on, as it used to do. So the dealer checked it out and said it was a module. I'm not sure where this module is located but it was less than $100 to fix.
My Expy is running fine now, but I think I will have to get rid of it soon. I have my 3 boys, all 5yrs and under, and I can't have it break down again and have us all stranded somewhere. I will be looking to get a 4 door F150 or 250. Maybe look at the Expy EL.
