Fred-just being honest-he has a hard time getting the hood open on our Escort!!

Thanks for the tip with the plugs, I'll hold out till 100k then and I know someone who can do it under the table for a lot less then most shops.

No more fuel additive and i will get the fuel filter in the next couple days, hopefully my huge belly wont get in the way too much-that should be a bit of a challenge!

Her problems are his, anyways dont u think? If she takes the truck to the stealership, the money she spends, its going to be his problem, big time...

Women, dont try to understand them, just love 'em :P

So got the fuel filter replaced, wow what a difference! I had the fuel system cleaned out for $50, apparently it needed it

I didnt realize how sluggish it was until I drove it with the new filter. Now we just need to see about the fuel economy. The air filter looks almost new and the oil was changed not even 1500 miles ago so hopefully this filter, cleaning will get me my moneys worth.

Starts fast & silent, pick up is restored, hopefully I can get atleast 16mpg in city-18 highway.

Try checking your vacumn lines, especially the elbow connections.

Like I said its hesitating when it starts up and the mileage drops, when I put fuel injector cleaner in it the milegae gets better and the hesitation stops.

Figured its either the fuel filter needs changed or the fuel system needs cleaned-I guess it can't hurt to do both but if I can save a little money that would be pretty kicka$$ seeing as we are expecting our first child in like 3 weeks.

And by the way, may husband doesnt know his head from his butthole when it comes to vehicle and maintanence....my father has been in the car business and races so I grew up with some understanding of how things work.

I appreciate your in put and know you all are way more knowledgeable then I am when it comes to these trucks so Thank you all for sharing.

How hard is it to change the fuel filter on these trucks?
The shop wants $50 for it, figured if I can do it myself we could save that & use it to get the fuel system cleaned.
What about changing the spark plugs?

$50? heck, my Ford dealer does it on mine for $19.95, P&L

What was done to the fuel system when you said you had the fuel system cleaned out?

I had a spark plug and filter change, along with a power injector flush at 98,000 miles.

The effect was dramatic improvement. Not sure which was more critical.

OK, so they cleaned the fuel line & the injectors-I think thats all they did. We replaced the fuel filter as well.

The truck is now starting right away with no hesitation-it took a tank of gas before that happned...but the fuel economy is still not improving- 13 mpg!

So what now? How do I get better fuel economy? A friend of mine suggested a new pcv valve. I am a little concerned about doing the spark plugs myself, I have heard its pretty frustrating.

Air filter looks good.

I think you will find that most of us average 12-14 mpg and learn to live with it. I do a lot better on the open highway on a long trip and can average 16-17 if there are no hills. As soon as I get into a city, even on freeways, it drops back to 13-14 mpg depending on traffic. In the city center I get about 12. If you are into hills and mountains, expect much less. It is a really heavy truck.

The best way to improve mileage is to have a "light foot."

did the dealer do the injector flush? I had Jiffy Lube do mine, but afterwards, realized it is NOT a power clean...they sucked it in via the booster line, but still advertise as "fuel injection system cleaning"

might be worth it when i get the F150 out of storage to have the dealer do it....

So should I have the dealer or someone else do the cleaning then?

I dont want to throw away more money if its not gonna help the fuel economy, know what I mean?

Any other ways to improve the fuel economy?

Watch the tachometer when you drive and keep it under 2,000rpm as much as possible. Check tire pressure regularly.
And wash it a lot (gets great mileage when engine isn't running).
