Don't just drive them, read a lot about how they are in the conditions you'll be in. The towing aspect, any engine will handle that, and based on what you're saying it's not that often or that heavy. If you were towing A LOT of weight, A LOT of the time there might be an argument for one over the other, but based on what you posted, if you keep the truck over a period of time the diesel will not pay for itself with better fuel efficiency or anything else. You should probably be more concerned with cold weather performance if you'll be seeing 20* or less.

I have a 2005 Crew Cab 4x4 with V10 and get about 11mpg around town and I've only been on the highway for an extended period once and got 12-something, I want to say 12.5mpg but I can't remember exactly what it was and it was before the truck was broken in. I haven't towed anything heavy.

Thanks for the responses guys and keep them coming. I should have mentioned that I currently own a 99 F250 with a 5.4l and have never been let down even when towing an 863 bobcat. I would prefer the deisel but don't want to get stuck with something in the garage all the time. Gas mileage and power pushes me towards deisel while reliabillity towards V10 and thats why I started the post to see if the majority are happy with their purchases or if the v10 crowd is displeased with power as the 6.0l crowd could be displeased with reliabillity. Again thanks and keep your opinions coming.

Oh, and by the way, I live up here in Canada, on the west coast. Lately the weather has been in the below 0s and up in the interiorit was -15 to-18 while I was there, and I have never Pluged in my truck, and I have never had a problem with it starting in the morning. I also agree with wolfe1104 ( nice truck wolfe) unless you want a new truck, look for a well maintained 7.3, their a great mtr.

I always wanted a diesel but couldnt afford one. I got a V10 and have not once in the last three years wished for a diesel. I love my V10. I had the chance to buy both again when it came to my wifes X. I went V10 again.

Guess you have never driven a V10 let alone put gas in one. My X has on more than one occassion gotten 16.7MPG. Thats a 4wd X with six and luggage and 4.30 rear end.

I recall seeing a post in the 6.0L forum, the owner was complaining about 8MPG empty. At work I was driving a new 2006 E350 PSD that was only getting 10MPG cruising on the freeway and it had a hard time holding 65mph up the Questa Grade in central California.

Hmmm... I see the poll shows, at the time I voted, an even split. 13 for the Diesel and 13 for the V10.

I'm a little surprise at the result. I would think the cold climate would suggest the gasser to be a favorite.

Good luck with which ever you choose.

I went with the 6.0 and am very happy with it, 11,000+ miles in 7 months, 6000 of those in the first month I got it. One non crippling issue with a sensor at ~4500mi but nothing since then. But that being said your best bet may be a gasser. Like others have said it's a personal choice. I'll never go back to gas but that's just me.

Benefits of a used V-10 are lower $$ investment due to the lower initial & resale price on gas powered trucks, plus no need to plug in up in northern Canada and it sounds like you're only going to do 2 trips towing. A V-10 is probably the way to go for you. It may also be easier for you to find someone to work on it if needed in remote areas, some folks have found it hard to find good 6.0 techs even in larger urban areas.

I'm on my 5th SD.
99 V10
2000 7.3
2003 6.0
2004 6.0
2007 V10

My 07 V10 is the truck of choice for me as to the rest.
Just get in it and go, plenty of power, less maintenance.
Sure it uses a bit more gas, did ya know gas is less than diesel?
Did ya know the diesel cost $5-6000 up front?
To each their own, I have enjoyed all my trucks!
Now if I was towing up hill 24-7 the diesel maybe the way to go.
Either truck will get the job done...nuff said!

I owned and operated 2001 Excursion LTD. V-10
I owned and operated 2003 Excursion LTD 6.0
I own and operate 2005 F - 350 6.0 Diesel
Let me say, I owned the GOOD, the ugly, and the bad! The best Ford I ever owned was the 2001 Excursion. Why I ever traded that vehicle beats me! I thought at that time, and was told that Ford was no longer manufacturing the Excursion. I have the King Ranch, F - 350 Fx4; 6.0, 8 foot bed; all options available. Problem is that the F - 350 is no comparison to the Excursion. And the Excursion with the 6.0 (2003) is no comparison to the F - 350 6.0. Difficult to understand, but true. I would buy another Ford if it were with the 2001 Excursion specs with a V - 10 gasser ! Ford holds the Excursion price on their F - 350 King Ranch models, but the options like dual air, security, garage door controls, etc., etc. etc., are just not there. Bad thing is there are no options with the competitlion.

I have also owned both ('05 6.0 and '07 V10)... I traded the diesel for all the reasons mentioned... plus I was one of those whose truck was constantly in being repaired. It was not a work truck, but a personal vehicle. I LOVE my V10 and you couldn't pay me to go back to a diesel. Again as mentioned above - each to their own - the thing that bothers me is when diesel owners state, as if it's a fact, that people buy the V10 because they can't afford the diesel. I can, but I refuse to be fooled again.
btw - I'm also in Canada - get the gasser. I used a dealer in Woodbridge that advertises as heavy truck friendly. I had to take it in 3 times to get a leaking rear engine seal fixed. The mechanics were "too busy" with work trucks (read diesel) that needed to be back on the road. What are you going to do in Upper Rubber Boot if you need servicing??

I might add that all 3 of my diesels have set in the shop a few times.
Good diesel techs are far and few!!
For the most part I would get info from this site in order to get my truck repaired!
Another thing that is far and few is a V10 in the shop

I own a 99 f-350 v10, pull 10,000-11,000 (t-190 bobcat w' attachment) often enough throughout the year. Never had any problem towing with 150,000 on odometer so far. Truck still has power left in it to pull more weight if the gcwr allowed it too. I don't care about fuel, its a write of for the business and if i wanted a good gas mileage vehicle i would have bought a honda. No exspenses that im worried about with a v10 compared to new 6.0 diesel

Gene, good points!

I have a V10 and have driven couple of 6.0s. I am surprised no one has mentioned the light switch power band and how sluggish they feel if you don't put your foot real deep into it. I agree with most that if you are going to be continuously towing, the 6.0/7.3 would not be a bad decision. Waiting for the turbo to spool up could get annoying if you are used to the low end grunt of the V10. If you want to get up and go on the freeway to pass, you'd better anticipate for this lag, it is substantial. Just my $.02.

One last note, spinning to 5K plus RPM can be fun, can't do that with a diesel.

diesels are overated unless you are putting a lot of miles on them in a short time frame or do serious towing frequently. no disrespect to diesel guys i owned one for four years (7.3). but you can not justify the price of a diesel above gas in the intial purchase, the price of fuel compared to gas, the maintance on it compared to gas.and the real kicker is fuel mileage. you pay all that extra money to get a little better than a v 10 engine some of you worse than a v 10. i got 12.5 with my diesel, had around 3000 dollars in exhaust, air intake, chip, trans command, all synthetic oils, fuel additives and so on it did nothing but go faster and empty my bank account. i got 12.5 to 13 before mods stopped by two dealers to ask questions they said well some people are only getting 10. bottom line if you need to move a house buy a diesel. save your money now. just remember you bought a ford so you are already doing better than the rest!
