40's to 48

I have a 1948 F-1 but am curious as to the dimensions of the earlier models. From what I understand there was virtually not change between the pre and post world war 2 models until 48. What is the size of the box? They were stamped or raised on the sides weren't they? Did the box have a spare tire holder on the side and then they changed to underneath the box in 48? Appreciate any replies or more you can give me...this is for someone who appears to have an odd assortment of parts on their truck and wants to decipher things out a bit...thanks

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jun-02 AT 03:19 PM (EST)]The '40-'41's had a narrowier box than the later models. The inside measurement of the box was only 46". In '42 the box was widened by 3 inches to 49", the length stayed the same, as did the height. The '40-'41 had the spare tire carrier mounted on the passenger side, but in '42 they moved it to the driver's side. The '48-early 50 box is the same as the '42-'47. The panels are raised on the side, and the tailgate is the same. In '48 Ford went with the spare tire carrier under the bed. In mid '50 Ford had a new box out, with smooth sides and such. Hope you found some of this helpful.

Thanks Gary...some good information I can pass on. Did the pre 48's have one size box....as opposed to the 48's that had the F-1 box and then the f-2 and 3 being a bit larger...by 16"..thanks jim

Yeah, they did have a longer box model on the 1 ton. It was an 8 ft bed I believe. They were called the express models. Very hard to find.

Gary, you seem to have the dimensions down pat. Do you know if it's possible to put a 49" bed (42 or later I think?) on an earlier frame (1939) for instance? Fenders look the same; maybe running boards are different?

I have two rough 39 (narrowbeds, one good "later" (wider) bed and rough "later" bed. Seems the 38 I bought had a wide bed on it, but it was pretty much disassembled, so I don't know if it was done resonably well or not.....

Thanks!

Running boards interchange goes like this, 38-39 are the same, 40-41 are the same, and 42-47 are the same. The rear fender interchange may be 38-41, but i'm not totally sure. The 42-47 does have a different rear fender, although they look the same as earlier. I believe that the 42-49 bed will go on the earlier frame easily. I think this because I had a junk 40 bed and mounted it on a spare '46 frame i had, and it bolted right onto the frame. So, i would think that the newer can go on earlier.

Thanks.

I have a bunch of 38-39 parts to get rid of or junk and I'm trying to keep the best ones - that will fit.

Appreciate you sharing your knowledge

Would you have a spare frame for on of the pick ups by chance? My 40 frame is trash, the previous owner loaded the bed with manure and left it in the field.

Thanks.

Gary, do you need an entire frame or pieces? I have two frames in Ohio (sorta rusty), and one extra in Colorado (a 38 not rusty at all but with a few pieces that need to be reinstalled) ( a couple small cross pieces unriveted by previous owner(s)

I have all the pieces and can I can send photos. Know where there are a couple of 38-39s in New Mexico also that likely have good frames.

The bigger trucks beds were also a few inches wider and had a cooler looking support on the back. The bigger beds also had a wooden floor showing, while the little guys had a wooden sub-frame with a metal top.

I don't need anything right now. I've finally gone through everything I had and kept all the good stuff to finsih up my trucks. And right now the trucks are kind of on the back burner as I'm working on painting my '70 Mustang and getting her mostly finished.
