The OEM speakers in my 98 F150 have been rattleing and distorting the sound long enough now so it's time they got replaced. The two front door speakers being the worst, they sound like the membrane has ripped. The two rear seem to sound fine but I would replace them also if it will improve the overall sound.
The sound system is the OEM AM/FM/Cassette w/6 CD changer and it workes fine and is plenty powerful enough, so no need to update or replace.
My question is:
What brand/type of stereo speaker would be as good or better for replacement of the OEM's and will work with the OEM sound system without modification?
There are a lot of speakers that will fit in your truck. I would suggest going to the Crutchfield site and looking for what will fit your needs. Crutchfield is great about sending connectors that will plug into your existing wiring so you don't have to cut wires to the speakers. Replacing your door speakers isn't too hard but getting to that last speaker behind the driver will require removing a lot of parts since you only have the third door.
You can also get them at bestbuy, crutchfield, etc. They sound good for the money. I have them in my 99 with the stock radio. I got wire connectors from bestbuy for $20.00. You could always cut and solder the stock wires to the new speakers but that is a bit of a PITA. I felt that it was $20.00 well spent. Plus, if I ever sell the truck and want to but the stock speakers back in it will be easy.
if you get what beekermartin speaks of you should be fine... just make sure when you install a new set you use sound deading on your doors... will really help the sound...
you know that dynomat stuff... like the door kits if you wana spring a little more cash..
Hey, i work at circuit city, I can pretty much say that anything will sound better than the stock set up. I would reccommend Pioneer if you want a sound similar to stock, but if you really want speakers you can push hard, get infinity, kicker, alpine, or eclipse. While you are at it, buy the speaker wire adapters, they are like no more than 12 bucks for all 4 (2 per package) and it saves you time beacuse you wont have to solder anything.
A new head unit will really add A LOT to your sound, plus giving you more options for how you can make your music sound. In my truck ive got a pioneer deck, only 100 bucks, with stock speakers, and it sounds great. If you are looking at a new deck, its going to cost you about 65 bucks on top of the price of the deck, for the mounting kit, wire harnesses, and antenna adapter if necessary.
These things are really simple to install on these trucks, so I wouldnt pay to have it done.
I put the JBL GTO series in both my TBird and the F150. They're a great quality speaker that has a rubber surround instead of foam like alot of aftermarket stuff has. Foam will not stand the test of time, and will deteriorate where rubber surrounds will not.
JL
you dont need nothing more than a set of pioneers, anything more your looking into buying amps and head units then next thing you know its never loud enough, pioneer 3- ways sound just fine

That's how I feel! I think they sound great for what they are. My stock speakers were not blown and the Pioneer's still sound much better. They aren't even in the same ballpark! If you plan on keeping the stock deck and not adding a sub then the pioneer's I mentioned will fit the bill.
Now, if I was spending the long dollar and replacing the deck, adding an amp, subwoofer, etc. There are much better speakers. But for the $100.00 I spent, for all four, I couldn't ask for more!
BTW, I am a bit of an audiophile. When I want to listen to extremely high quality sound I listen to it on my home theater speaker system. There is nothing like a glass of 18 yr old Macallan while rocking out to Bob Dylan. But for my commute to work the Pioneer's get the job done.

Update:
Thanks for all the replys.
After checking around (Best Buy, Circuit City & a custom car audio shop) I decided to go with Crutchfield and then went about choosing the model that best fit my particular parameters (i.e. price, price and price.)
I was all set to go with a set of Pioneer TS-G6841R 2-ways when I found a set of Sony XS-V5742A 4-ways for the same price whilst compareing specs. The Sony's had slightly better sensitivity, better lower & higher frequency response and could handle more power so they won out.
Other reasons why I went with Crutchfield was because they included the necessary wireing harness' for each speaker and what appears to be RIGHT ON installation instructions tailored to my particular vehicle FREE.
I ordered them last Sat night and recieved them on Tuesday.
Only thing left to do is install 'em
If interested I'll post an update on their performance once I get around to putting them in.
btw, I only went with the two front door spkrs at this time. I don't know if I'll need or want to swap out the rears just yet.

you won't be disappointed with the service and advice from Crutchfield...you should put those in the rear though, should be the same size....the main sound (according to crutchfield when i did my car) comes from the rear and the front just "fills in" i even have mine adjusted one click to the rear (fade)
