Ford Motor Co. has hired a former Boeing executive as a human resources consultant, just as the company prepares for national contract talks with the UAW in the summer.
Jerry L. Calhoun, human resources chief at Boeing Co. when Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally was there, was hired as a consultant by Joe Laymon, Ford's group vice president for human resources, spokeswoman Marcey Evans confirmed Monday.
Calhoun's history suggests he can be a tough negotiator and could attack some UAW conventions like the jobs bank. At Boeing, Mulally and Calhoun worked together to slash Boeing's commercial airplanes workforce by more than half, to about 50,000 workers.
