I have a 1954 F-750 with a bad 279, and I recently purchased what I believe is a 332. Horsepower difference isn't much, which is surprising to me. The difference between a 302 and 332 truck engines is only 10 or so hp.
Real question is, I don't have the carb for it, and it has the governed distributor. Do normal y-block distributors work? Such as from a 292? I don't really think I need the governor.....
they fit if you change the cog.at least the car ones do say from a 368.not sure abour governed dist,.as long as the shaft is the same size you should be able to change it.
We have a 1961 with a 332 in it. I was told that the 332 is made out of the Lincoln Y-block; it is 1" taller than the 292 block. The 332 has a 1" longer shaft on the dist.
We had a lot of trouble with the carb-governor-distributor setup for a while. We ended up taking the original dist apart, cleaning it, and plugging the vacuum lines. Then installing a new generic Holley 4bbl (1850). The engine has a centrifugal advance but no vacuum advance or governor. It runs fine.
That what I was thinking. Plugging the lines and putting an Autolite 2100 or Holley 2bbl on it.
Weird thing is, I have a 279 that was original to the truck I'm fixing that lost oil pressure and seized. It has a distributor that I think came out of a 302 as it takes the later style points and has vacuum advance.
hi all just reading your threadin a truck the size you want torque . i have a 292 in a f700 , just build a 361ft to replaces the 292 215 hp but
316in torque the old y is 135 hp with 245 torque but i will say one very tuff motor did me good for 7 ys now and is still in very very good nick you need torque in that size truck
Big Y parts will not interchange with small Y parts. The '54 279 distributor may fit the 332, but a 292 distributor will not. The exception to parts interchanging, is basically accessory bracket (some, not all) and generator. Most of the tune up parts (cap/rotor, points/condensor) interchange between all the Y-blocks. Several of the distributors used in the Y-blocks are a basic vaccuum advance, and use standard points and condensor. You can get a crank and new bearings for the 279, and a new oil pump if you wanted to rebuild it. This is basically the info I am finding in the adventures of restoring my F-750 fire truck. It has a 279 Big Y in it. I can get you Ford part numbers if you'ld like, or if you need any info, I can get it for you from my 48-55 F-700 and larger illustrated parts catalog.
