Angry 8 Mpg?

I am still troubleshooting this awful gas mileage.Took car to the dealer to troubleshoot the loss of power.Seems that timing was off- and its been set twice since i got it, and the idle adjustment was way off- so he backed of the screw adjustment.I refuse to believe that this could be causing this awful mpg and power loss.what I did find was that the tube coming from the EGR has a crack in it.Could this effect performance or mpg?
Again, ive replaced: Cat converter,EGR valve, IAC valve,o2 sensor, map sensor, major tune up, replaced both fuel filters, tranny and oil fluid and filters. The only code left to address is the isuff egr flow.
any input would be extremely helpful at this point.

Also anyone had to replace the valve cover gaskets? What kind of labor quote am I looking at?

Valve cover gaskets are notorious for leaking. You can do them yourself, it's just that getting the covers off and on is a little tricky and can be a pain in the butt. Are you talking about the steel pipe that comes off the driver's side exhaust manifold? That could probably cause issues. You may also want to check all of your vacuum lines as well as cleaning your throttle body / upper / lower intake. Hopefully, the timing was set with the SPOUT connector REMOVED with the engine warm. I believe also you're supposed to set the idle stop with the IAC disconnected / removed to 500 or 600 rpm, I forget offhand, I'd have to look it up. The only other thing I can think of is if one or all of your fuel injectors are clogged up or leaking by. I generally try and do all of my own work, so, not sure what labor would be for you... but last I recall, it's probably going to be anywhere from $50-$75 an hour, unless rates went up or are higher where you're at.

Tell us more about your truck again. Year, tire size, man\auto trans, 4WD, engine size, millage, etc... Have you done a compression test on the cylinders?

If I understood, after all you've replaced, you're still getting an EGR code, is that right? If so, which code? Is it a KOEO, KOER, or CM code (or combinations of the above)? A crack in the EGR tube could cause a KOER and/or CM code, but wouldn't cause a KOEO code.

With that bad of gas mileage, have you checked the fuel pressure? Checked the vacuum line to the FPR for gasoline (indicating a ruptured diaphragm)? Other gas leak?

well it definately fixed the power/hesitating issue, but the truck idles like crazy and the sputtering is surely coming from this exhaust leak.$360 to fix this tube seems excessive, cant it just be welded?I finally took the car to the dealer and I just assumed that they checked for vacuum leaks since I pointed out I suspected it to be the culprit but who knows? I also suspect that the torque converter is causing the seizing and clunking noise when I break but I will check the booster and lines before I go that route.
My next step is to have the fuel pressure checked and injectors cleaned.I have already put $1300 into this $750 truck and could see myself easily putting another $2000 into it.The car sat for who knows how long but @ 90k miles I am hopeful that it will last me another 50k-60k at least.I am not much of a mechanic so any suggestions are welcome.I dont know where to start or what to check and doubt that your average friendly mechanic will be kind to my wallet.
The truck is a 87 Bronco II 4x4 stock engine and wheels, no mods as of yet!

Clunking and noise on braking might be the brakes. You may need to have them checked and have new parts installed. What do you mean by idles like crazy? High idle or low idle or all over the place? Could be the Idle Air Control, sensors, etc. You could probably buy a new / replacement EGR pipe and install it yourself. I would re-check for vacuum leaks as well. If you really want some good info, get a Haynes or Chilton's manual or go to the autozone.com repair guides. A lot of the info is written so most people can understand, regardless of whether or not they are mechanically inclined or not, at least that's how it seems to me. Where are you located at... in the U.S. or? I'm sure if one of the more mechanically savvy folks on here or on broncoii-ranger.com's forums are close enough to you, they might be willing to help you out.

you might be able to find the egr pipe at a local salvage yard fairly cheap..as lonas it is a 2.9 out of a bII or ranger..it should be the same. as for the idle are you sure the timing was set with the spout removed and the engine warm?? if it wasn't the timing will still be off. i would get a fuel pressure guage and check the fuel pressure, the fpr could be bad as they are notorius to fail. as for the valve covers..it took me about a hald a day to do both sides on mine.the gaskets are about $15-20 for the set.but can be aggravating on the passenger side.driver side is pretty easy to maneuver...hope this helps!

I know when I did my valve covers, I swapped them so I could use my ignition wire separators, at least the ones that were still on the covers. Not sure if others were removed when a previous owner had replaced the gaskets prior to... with the notorious for drying out and cracking and leaking even worse CORK junk. Fel-Pro rubber / perma-dry gaskets are your best bet... I have had no leaks and it's been well over a year since I did mine!

This tank will be crap with all the snow plowing I've been doing in low-range!

I've gotten as high as somewhere between 23 and 26 mpg with P235/75R-15s that -were- on mine, with a 5-speed and using cruise control on a road trip, fresh oil change and the usual stuff. The truck itself had between 135 and 140K on it, but the engine and most of the drivetrain didn't / doesn't. Original owner had flat towed it behind and RV most of the time. Back to the topic, replacing the EGR tube should fix the code, and that should help... but I'm wondering if your injectors are dirty. You may want to try running fuel system and fuel injector cleaner in it for a few tanks to see if that helps.

my 86 b2 averages around 21-24 mpg you should at least get no less than 18 i would think.mine has a 5 speed,p235/75/15 terrain tires.b2 has 181k but the engine was replaced 2 years ago so engine prob has no more than 30k.
