i want to get a spare engine to put in my 90 f150 i have a 90 302 now and a 5 speed 2wd what engine would be good to watch for i would like a little more power then what i have now i was hopeing to find one that i can bolt in without to many changes. thnxs
Look for a 302HO from a mustang or Tbird/Cougar, or a 351 from a 94+ F150/Bronco. The HO will drop right in and run on your existing computer, but the 351 will need a corresponding 351 computer. Both will produce loads more power than your current plant. BTW, a cam upgrade will really wake up your existing motor.. if it's not completely bagged.
'87-to the end of the 5.0HO somewhere around '96. Some Lincolns also had the HO, as well as police Crown Vics. The 94+ truck 5.0 also had a pretty decent roller cam in it.
It's a sheet metal piece with 8 legs on it that bolts down in the lifter valley and keeps the lifters aligned with the help of H brackets.
I just remembered you'll need to change the distributor drive gear as well.
The 302 distributor will not work in a 351W. The oil pump shaft and hole in the end of the distributor are different than a 302. The only things you can swap from a 302 to a 351W are: Cylinder Heads (open up bolt holes), timing cover, water pump, camshaft, and valve covers. Oh and possibly the timing set....not exactly sure on that one but I am positive on the rest. Good luck.
