I just got my second F350 upgrading from a 1997 to a 2001. The 01 is a 4x4 and I noticed that it has a lot of vibration when in the 4x4 mode. There does not appear to be any grinding sounds but it makes a lot more noise and vibration up front then when in 2WD mode. The u-joint on the front drive shaft seems solid. What should I look for to help solve this problem. Hoping it's not a transfer case.

I just rebuilt my rear driveshaft for having a lot of vibration and all the u-joints and carrier bearings were tight, no worn out needle bearings, etc.
The carrier bearing was tight as well.
I guess what I am trying to say is: if it were my truck I would replace all the u-joints.
I really doubt it's your transfer case. They just quit without making a sound.
And did all that replacing help? Mine has vibration as well, I thought it was due to someone putting the driveshaft back in 90 degrees out. Perhaps another reason. Any thoughts? I also have some good gear slop and thought of looking into the transmission during my upcoming clutch installation. Any thoughts. Ironwood
I would pull the front drive shaft and make sure that the joints (all of them in the shaft) turn freely without any resistance. U joints that are not used very often due to not being in four wheel drive in like forever will lock in place sometimes, or, they will get a spot that is tight during its travel. This will cause the vibration that you stated. I would also check to make sure that your drive shaft is straight and doesn't have a lot of run-out, Also, while the shaft is out, check both yokes to make sure that they are tight. Also, check the drive line slip joint. They will cause a vibration too if they are pretty loose. Whatever you do, if you do pull the front shaft, make sure that you mark exactly where it was in relationship to the yokes. Otherwise, you may create a new vibration. I don't think it is your tranfer-case, or your transmission.

It completely eliminated all the vibration.
Some gear slop is ok, it has to be there. If your drivetrain feels excessively sloppy the first place I would look is the rear differential.
