Flooded

First of all let me say Hello to all ford lovers this is my first topic...Heres a good one for you guys I have a 99 powerstroke 250 p/u.It was flooded I drained it and got it to work again.I did many things to it and at the end of it all it worked great.BUT.Soon after it started to die out.Say Im going 30 mph and I want to pass a car and floor it.The truck will just die and wont start.I towed it to my house and went to start it the next day and it started fine.1 mile down the road, same problem. Now it wont start at all.I need help.I tired of playing with it.

Welcome to FTE! The Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS) could be the culprit. One of our members here, guzzle92, has a great writeup for your consideration:

Thanks for the reply but I changed that and also the injection module both computers 3 injectors a few sensors someone told me that it may be the high pressure oil pump.but I dont want a $500 dollar maybe..That would hurt.

on the top of the HPOP, you'll see the plug there, with a hex head (allen wrench) fitting. take that plug out, and the oil should be no more than 1/2" from the top.

There is a little plug on the top of it. You'll have to remove the black plastic engine cover, and then the hpop resevoir is the tall silver thing right in front. Remove the little plug on top and peek inside... oil should be about an inch or so from the top.

Also, at what level is the regular engine oil? Since the injectors are driven by oil, it seems weird things happen on these trucks when the oil level is too full, or too low... sometimes.

Also, can you go more into detail about how the truck dies when you're driving? And what does it do when you try to restart... and is this problem still going on, or was it a one-time thing?

Lastly, list any mods you have done to the truck... performance chip, etc.

I'll check that oil tomorrow the truck has been parked since mid Dec 06 at the ranch. Im at a total stanstill with it.No mods have been added all stock. It just cranks but wont start or it will start and stay on for about 3 sec.then die.I havent checked the oil but I will be sure to do that. Mr.Fixit if the hpop is low on oil where does it drain into the engine.I ask because It doesnt leak oil.

There's a little check valve in the bottom of the resevoir that can get weak and allow the oil to seep back out of the resevoir... I'd think that would only effect starting, though.

If I understand right... you were driving the truck, when it died (did is sorta stutter at all, like it was running out of fuel?), and wouldn't restart. You got it towed to the ranch, and there it has sat, since. It will crank but not start, or catch for a few secs then die.

When you crank on it, do you see any white smoke coming from the exhaust as it's cranking? Make sure the batteries are good and strong (recharge or replace if need-be... weak batts can crank but may not start the truck). If you don't see smoke while cranking, it likely means you're not getting fuel. Could be the fuel pump is bad, a faulty connection, or a clogged inlet to the fuel pump, etc...

Crank it for 10+ seconds and see if you see any white smoke... if none, we can check on the fuel pump and make sure that it's pumping fuel to the injectors.

my guess would be the fuel pump. open the valve (yellow handle) on the back side of the fuel filter bowl and then turn the key to the on position. if the pump is working you will know it.

Yeah just driving and then die didnt sound like its starving for fuel and the fuel tanks are clean. Its not my fuel pump because when I turn that yellow lever the fuel gushes out.It seems to get no fuel no smoke. But funny that even with ether it wont start. My batteries are good and crank fast.I also always jump it with my f-650 to keep the batts from going low.I work on heavy equipment all day long and I feel Im pretty mechanically incline. All the old 7.3's non turbos we have are so simple to work with but now these new fords are all wires and sensors. They drive me nuts.

For starters Ether and glow plugs dont mix, WD40 works and is safer.

Have you checked all of the harness connections for corosion after the flodding?

First of all, stop using ether to start it. That is a big no go in these engines.

Second, describe the flooding. What happened?

Yeah I know ether dont mix with those engines but drastic measures you know. The truck was flooded up to the steering wheel.I drained it completely from the the fuel tank to the engine. It ran fine for about 5 months then these problems started
