I think I would enjoy the excitement of being a repo man to earn some extra cash, Anyone have some advice for me? I think it would be good for laffs if nothing else
In my younger days I worked for a short time as a mechanic for a tow truck company, I wondered why the wrecker drivers looked mean and carried sidearms,I guess I know!
I guess I wouldn't want to do it. People can get crazy if someone tries to take their vehicle, even though they can't take the responsibility of making their payments to something they bought. People think they absolutely need their vehicle and will do anything to keep it.
i did repo's, and served subpoenas back in the 70's.
i as threatened, had guns pulled on me, was shot at twice, and had 3 dogs sicked on me, with the rotty biting me twice before i shot it. thats when i quit. it wasn't worth the money, and people were nicer back then.
After WWII the local Willis dealer fitted a small boom out the back of a Jeep and used it to repo cars. Just a kid, I went along on a trip into the hills to repo a big Chrysler sedan. We found it at a filling station and the locals gave us no problem when we hooked up and started back. It was a cold February day and the inside of the porous Jeep was very cold when we came to the first of the many hills we would have to go over. Part way up the front of the Jeep came off the ground and was impossible to steer. For each hill on the way home I had to sit on the hood to keep the wheels down .... almost froze to death. That was my last repo trip.
Good luck on that repo thing. I remember when I moved to San Antonio, TX in the mid 1990's. The big story in town was of a repo man who had a bank note repo. He went like 2:00 am for the repo and in the course of trying to pull it off someones property, was shot dead by the car owner. At the time, the state of Texas has some some law that use of deadly force to defends ones personal property was legal. In the the end, the bank was wrong as the guy's note was and had been current. The shooter was never charged because of this.
A&E or maybe Discovery, had a short lived series profiling some repo men/women. Many times people came out carrying and waving some type of gun and a few chased the tow truck shooting.
