Power steering pump shaft

2002 F350 CC 4x4 with 35" tires. Has any one had the shaft on the power steering pump snap off? The shaft broke right above the pitman arm.

I have heard of someone's pressed on pully spinning off of the shaft but not breaking it. I suppose if the pump froze up, anything would be possible.

did the shaft on the steering gear break (pitman arm area) or did the pump shaft break? you said both areas?? steering gear no never heard of it other than in a collision. pump shaft yes but not on a ford. chevy astro vans have a serious porblem with it.

There was a NHTSA defect investigation for 1999-2001 for steering gear sector shafts and pitman arms. The investigation number was: EA01009.
There were quite a few crashes and injuries related to this defect.
Ford claimed that it happened because of abuse and modifications and the investigation was closed.

go to: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/defect/

select: search defect investigations and enter EA01009

It will give you all the info you're looking for.

Good luck, and I hope nobody got hurt.

Austin

The shaft on the gear box broke right over the pitman arm. I have never seen this befor on a light duty truck. In the metal you can see were it looks like it had a hair line crack. I no some years back Freightliner had a problem with that same shaft braking.
Thanks for the help.

No sweat!
I bet if you approach Ford calmly & smoothly with the information in hand, they could be persuaded to do a free fix for you.
That is a pretty serious situation depending on speed, road, etc.
I was fortunate enough to get a complete new steering gear box from them
on my '01 when way past warranty.

Good luck to you,

Austin

Petersons 4x4 magazine built that ultimate superduty a couple of years ago that kept on breaking sector shafts, but I think it had 49" tires

I already had it replaced as I need the truck but I will take your advice and see if they will pay the bill. I even had to pay the core charge because the shaft was broke. Go figure

Thanks
Bob

I remember that truck, it had a 4 or 6" lift and they cut the fenders to fit the tires. Did they write in the magazine about the shaf braking?

Thanks

Yeah it kept breaking on the Ultimate Adventure that they have every year. I can't remember if they came up with a fix or not. It'd be worth looking back at some old issues
