We may want to consider a roll/light bar for our beast - they are not strictly required, but do add piece of mind if we let someones kid drive it.
i am thinking one a little more than cab high, with braces bolted to the floor of the box, over the frame. Or do you think we need to go directly to the frame? One way it can be unbolted and the box used to haul wood or whatever, the other way is much stouter.
Also, I was wondering about the exhaust. The only requirement is that the headers dump under the vehicle, not out the top. That could be a fire hazard in season, and we could pack the pipes with mud.
My thought is to make two stacks, much the same as the big trucks have. The stacks would be bolted to the uprights of the roll bar and we would not use any sort of muffler.
Does anyone (dale) have access to some drill stem, and what do you guys think we should do about the exhaust?
I think I mentioned that my B.I.L. has a roll bar such as you describe sitting in his driveway, I could probably talk him out of it. I wish I could get him to join the chapter as he has a couple of Ford trucks, an '89 4X4 and a '65 F250 flatbed but he's 100% computer illiterate and refuses to eve try to go on the Internet even though my sister has aomputer and spends most of the day on it. I can probably get him to helpout a little with the chapter truck and maybe even get him involved in our events...we'll see.
But I digress...
As soon as it warms up a little here I'll head back to the wrecking yard to finish pulling the front axle. (It's up to 20º right now...it was 18º when I got up) Which brings me to another question: the truck I'm pulling the front axle out of has a tube bumper/push bar on the front. Do we want it? Probably get it for cheap...
A roll bar connected to the bed...isn't the best...usually when you roll a car/truck, the RB takes a side hit, easily sheer off the bed, or twist away so instead of making contact with the frame and helping you, it can actually cause more harm and trap you inside...that's why all approve cages and such for racing/etc., need to become a "member of the structure", not the body...there are some exceptions on how things are reinforced for the stress points (like on unibody cars), but after all that work, IMO it's just easier to connect to the frame...place belting between the mounting and there's enough to allow the bar to "work" when in tough terrain...
If you are going back out to the truck, there is a 4" forged steel block under each side of the rear springs that we are going to need. The front bumper sounds nice too.
And roger that, about the bro - got one just like him. I see no reason to restrict our membership to those on-line . . .
I've got the front end now, complete with the springs, hangers and associated hardware as well as the shock towers. And the front bumper. Everything so far was $260. I was eyeing those rear end lift blocks while I was there but wasn't equipped to pull 'em at the time (rear end of the truck is still sitting on the ground) and they close early on Sat. I was delayed getting there because I was dealing with frozen and broken pipes here. And still am...
I assume you also got the power steering box? If not, we better be looking for other options. They are a bear to steer without some power assist.
Sorry about the froze pipes - it was 20 degrees below zero at my brother's ranch in Wyoming yesterday morning - which is why I live in California!!!
I should be up at your place helping - but yesterday they cut into my jugular vein to insert a string of drilling tools. They are afraid any extra strain will cause their patch to blow off. In truth, the day was spent sleeping in front of the TV - I hope I can get back to work once this current batch of trouble is behind me!
This lazing around on the couch is sure habit-forming.
I thought we were still up in the air about the steering...didn't somebody say they had a power box we could have? And I do have access to an '85 4X4 power box, just haven't had the chance to go up and look at it yet to see if I can make it work. If I buy the box off the '77 I'll have to wait till next Friday (payday) as I can't afford it right now...
As for the lazing about on the couch bit, I'll gladly trade with you for a while. (That part at least...you can keep the bit about drilling into the jugular vein...!)

Yea, Skipped-link has one, but it will have to be shipped. As to the money, lets get it right. Mike will send you what you have spent but he may need to collect it first. I don't want anyone out-of-pocket on this build. I like a pay-as-you-go setup - no chance for hard feelings.

btw, the 2wd has a new NAPA rebuild steering box on it, if it can be used.
