I was changing my oil yesterday and after changing the filter and draining the old oil, I removed the fill cap to put the new oil in. There was a tan colored gunk on the inside of thecap and around the opening. Does anybody know what this is? I put very few miles on my 99 exped., it has right at 50k now. I drive it mostly in the winter so the operating temp doesnt get high very often. It has been extremely cold here (Colorado) and I thought maybe it was some condensation or water had gotten into the oil. Any ideas?

Reason: typo
Most likely condensation as you said. When oil is watered down it makes a tan/brown gel. Sence it is only on the cap and not in the oil you drained, all should be good with the motor.
I agree with you & ReAX, it sounds like a condensation problem, from your short trip, not full warm up operation, as that will cause plenty of condensation in the engine, not good for it at all.
Make sure your PCV valve is working properly, so the crankcase is being purged with fresh air as designed.
Then take this puppy for about a 10 mile out & back, interstate drive, at least once a week, to get things fully warmed up & blown out real good.
It'll help by getting the oil up to proper operating temperature, to evaporate all that moisture in there & clean out some of the carbon buildup too.
