Hey guys I finally got the cleveland finished and in the truck (1974 F100). Got pics on my gallery. Question is, is there a difference in the tranny length between a c6 with the round bell housing and the c6 with the small bell housing? I measured them and I got about 34 and 3/4 inches on both unless I measured wrong. But, when I installed the cleveland and the tranny together the crossmember for the tranny did not match the holes on the frame. It was short by about 2.5 inches. Even the yoke on the shaft was off by that much. Now that I mention that, will this hurt the drive shaft or tranny shaft if it is off by that much? Does this have to do with the motor mounts maybe or the motor mount perches on the frame? I used motor mounts for a 302. The previous engine that was in the truck was a 390 with the round bell housing. I guess that was more than one question.
you might actually have a 390 engine perch question, are they right for a 302? the 302 mounts are correct for a Cleveland, but the mounts depend on the chassis. 302 mounts for a 70 torino/ranchero might be different than for any year mustang or a 74 F100. the differences in the mounts i've seen is what you're describing, fore and aft location.
2 1/2" too short on the Dshaft is a no-go in my book, it has to be corrected.
I purchased for a late 70s I believe. When I tried the block by itself it did fit so I figured the mounts and perches might be the same for both the cleveland and the 390. I wonder if those for the 400 are different or will they be the right ones. I do have a set of the 400 perches available if they are the ones. I hope someone here knows the answer to this one. Thanks for responding grclark351.......
I just installed a 351c with a c6 in a 74 f100 and found that the tranny is sitting about 2.5 inches away from the drive shaft. The truck had a 390 with a c6 with a round bell housing. I used 302 motor mounts on the cleveland. Could the perches be the problem? Will the 400 perches work better than the 390 perches. Anyone have a cleveland in their 70s truck? The 390 perches are rounded where they mate the motor mounts. I noticed that the 400 perches have a square area about 6 or 8 inches long where they mate to the motor mounts. Anyone have any ideas????????????????????????????????
The 400 mounts must be used. Measure the trans/390 setup. I think the combo of the FE block(bell housing) and trans are different. You may need to have your driveshaft extended.
Like Clark says, it might be a perch issue. In my case, I just told O'Reilly I had a '78 with a 302 for the mounts. That lined up with the M perches and everything else with my 351C installation. The only thing I MAY have done is put the tranny crossmember in different holes on the frame rails, my truck has three sets for different applications. If there was a difference, it was minimal.
If I recall correctly, there was a way to put the tranny mount crossmember in backwards and things wouldn't line up. Check that crossmember and make sure the offset is facing the right way for things to line up. It would have made a big difference.
How do your perches look? Do your motor mounts have the retaining bolt centered on the motor mount?
Mach1s
Are you refering to the mounts or the perches? If you are refering to the mounts they wont fit the 351c. If you are refering to the perches, that I would have to find out if they work. I think that is easier than extending the drive shaft unless the shaft is the problem. But now that I think about it, if the tranny support is not matching up then the shaft is the right size. That takes me back the engine bay.
I think you just answered my question. If you had a 351m in your truck then all I have to do is change out the perches. Good thing I have a spare truck for parts and it has the perches. Now I just have to wait for good weather. Bummer..................
Thanks for the inpur guys.........
REALLY APPRECIATE IT........................
There is always the way I did the mounts for my 460, since I didn't feel like going on a tower hunt or even bothering with a tower swap.
I bolted the trans to the crossmember and connected the driveshaft with the engine supported by a cherry picker. That took care of everything connected to the trans that mattered.
I used Lincoln mounts which have "ears" and a through-bolt instead of the Ford tower setup. I lowered the oil pan down onto a piece of 1/2" wood to set pan clearance, and levelled the engine by eyeball. I inserted two pieces of square tubing under the mount and nestled in a piece of angle (to support them behind where the crossmember leaves off) and tacked the assembly with a stick welder. Run a drill through the hole for the bolt and through the side of the tubing, then test fit.
Remove bolt, lift engine, remove wood, weld mounts to crossmember.
If you search the Advance Auto website for 1970-73 Torino 351C "mount, engine" you'll see some pics of the style available for your engine.
No hunting for the right towers, no custom driveshafts, no problem, has worked fine since 1998.
