I have been searching and I need help. My side cover is leaking, after a new gasket. Are there any replacement covers that are more ridgid than the stock stamped steel one? Maybe a billet or a heavier gauge. This is for a 92 F150 4.9 I6.
How did you tighten the bolts on it? If they were overtightened, that might have pushed the gasket out of place. Also, if the gasket slipped when you were installing it, that could also be the problem. I don't think the rigidity would have much to do with that unless I'm reading your question wrong. Is it leaking around the cover or is there oil coming through it somewhere. Hope this helps.
I torqued the bolts to spec while I had the engine out of the truck. The oil is leaking from aroun the back corner of the cover. I figured if I could find somthing more ridgid it would transfer the load to the edges better than the stock cover. I am probably going to add a little RTV to the gaket and try again. Thanks for the input.
I believe a lot of valve covers leak because of over tighting. Do not confuse inch pounds with feet pounds like I did. I did not believe the spec because I was thinking foot pounds.
It took me a couple of times to get this gasket just right. If it is slightly off it will leak. I used just a little liquid gasket to hold the rubber gasket on until I got it tightened. Hope it helps.
The cover had a little warp to it I straightend it out and put it on with a thin coat of RTV and it works like a champ. The design of the cover Just seems a bit cheesy. I think it could have been engineered a lot better but i guess it works.
