One high output alt probably would be enough, but i can do dual alts for about the same price and not have an alt wound tight to put out that many amps. I do have 1/0 wire running to my amps and 4 gauge to my distribution block in the center console that feeds my 250 watt 12v-12v power supply for the computer and my inverter and a couple other things. I emailed Jody today about the pcm and he got back to me and said that the pcm is no different between the dual and single alts, so all i need is the parts which Ed is being very helpful with and hopefully have everything together and ordered by the end of the week! Most people are saying i don't need two alts but that's like saying you don't need a bts tranny, sure most of us don't need a bts tranny but when you have one you know you can add all the power you want and it will do it's job. I am going to be able to draw all the power i ever need to and the dual alts will do their job. Plus i can't see buying one ho alt that when you wind it that tight the life of it goes down when for a little more i will have two alts that work half as hard as one ho alt. Thanks to everyone for all your help and if anyone has any questions pm me and i will answer them. After Ed gets all the parts together i will have a total price and parts list if anyone else wants dual alts. Now that I know the pcm will work the rest is pretty easy.
I posted this in the electrical forum to and one member there said he checked on a dual alt truck and it looked like the battery output wires were tied together, the two "A" terminal wires were tied together, and each "I" terminal wires ran seperately to the pcm. He said the "I" terminal wire is the one that turns the alt on and off. So will i have to run another wire to the main harness that goes into the pcm or does the wire harness that Ed from discount ford parts has going to do that job for me and that's all that i will need? Thanks
Well with alot of help from Ed at y2kfordparts.com and other members of this site finally got the dual alternator setup figured out. I ordered all my parts from Ed today. I got all the parts i needed for about the same price as what it would cost to get a high ouput alternator and i will have all the power i need. Looks to be a pretty easy bolt on job once everything gets here. Thanks again to everyone for sharing your knowledge and helping get this worked out. If anyone has any questions or wants to know what parts they will need to do this pm me or talk to Ed at y2kfordparts.com.
